Ludwigsburg

Ludwigsburg was planned in 1704 only as location for a small castle for recreation, it developed under the regency of duke Eberhard Ludwig rapidly to a town – the town of castles. Gorgeous centre of Ludwigsburg ist the residency castle (Residenzschloß), nearest to this, also very attractive, the castle "Jagd- und Lustschloss Favorite", built for recreation and hunting events. Not far away from this imposant buildings located is the exceedingly charming castle "Seeschloß Monrepos" just at the shore of a small lake.

The residency castle (Residenzschloß)

was built from 1704 to 1733 under the regency of duke Eberhard Ludwig. With 452 rooms in 18 builings it is one of the biggest german castles in baroque style being preserved. The so-called "swabian versailles", surrounded by the big garden show "Blühendes Barock" was the residence of dukes and kings of Württemberg in earlier times.
Today the castle is used for state ceremonies and culturel events – mainly on the beautiful court and in the order hall.

The unique porcelain manufactory of the state Baden-Württemberg

is located in the residency castle, established by duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg in 1758. Untill today the porcelain manufactory is one of the most important manufactories in europe. Experts for porcelain love the precious pieces, which are created using historical procedure techniques. Forms and decor of the epoques baroque and rococo and the well-known "scale-design of Ludwigsburg" are produced here as well as modern forms and decors, also produced in the traditional manner.
Every piece of porcelain is unique - hand-made formed and painted, no pattern is used.

The garden show (blooming baroque; Blühendes Barock)

is a unique park with amazing art of garden-creations throughout different epoques and regions located on more than 30 ha around the residence castle. Changing exhibitions, flower shows and the magic world of the fairy tale garden (Märchengarten) are fascinating the whole family.
The world largest exhibition of pumpkins takes place from August, 31st – Novembre, 4th 2007.

The castle "Jagd- und Lustschloss Favorite"

built for recreation and hunting events under duke Eberhard Ludwig from 1713 – 1723 is located about 5 minutes on feet from the residency castle. The front ist baroque style, but the interior was constructed in the time of empire. In addition to the ingenious frescos the 0.72 square kilometres nature and wilderness parc around the castle ist a further highlight.

The castle beside a lake "Seeschloß Monrepos"

located just at the shore of a small lake this charming castle was built as a pavilion for the hunt by duke Eberhard Ludwig, improved by duke Carl Eugen and completed by king Friedrich the 1st from Württemberg in the year 1768. Also 230 years later it is a masterwork of Rococo with an empire-interior.
In summer it is the location of romantic concerts – like the big open air classic concert with fireworks, which is one of the many events of the Ludwigsburger festival performance.

In the city there are some other points of interest.
Beside some very nice buildings and churches in the baroque-style, different kinds of museums (porcelain museum, museum of fashion, city-museum, museum of execution of sentences, village-museum, military museum) invite you to a journey to local life in the past.

History of Ludwigsburg

At the beginning duke Eberhard Ludwig planned a castle to get an accomodation on the hunt and in summer.
Following the example of other dukes and thinking, that founding a city is an evidence of his great authority he decided to add a town to the planned castle. 1709 he invited people to settle, ground and material he placed at their disposal, 15 years without tax he promised.
But first the duke had to promise his residency here, than the town was built.

Business

Ludwigsburg with its 85,000 habitants is not only traditional but also future oriented.
The modern face of this attractive and economically important location is built on three key industries: automotive/machine engineering, financial services and trade.

Beyond this traditional business Ludwigsburg has developed into an important location for media. Another emerging business is the software development.
