Book excerpt: The master of ancient Greek comic drama, Aristophanes combined slapstick, humour and cheerful vulgarity with acute political observations. In The Frogs, written during the Peloponnesian War, Dionysus descends to the Underworld to bring back a poet who can help Athens in its darkest hour, and stages a great debate to help him decide between the traditional wisdom of Aeschylus and the brilliant modernity of Euripides. The clash of generations and values is also the object of Aristophanes’ satire in The Wasps, in which an old-fashioned father and his loose-living son come to blows and end up in court. And in The Poet and the Women, Euripides, accused of misogyny, persuades a relative to infiltrate an all-women festival to find out whether revenge is being plotted against him.

Book excerpt: Aristophanes, often referred to as "The Father of Comedy", is an ancient Greek poet and playwright who is credited with helping to create the art of satire and irony. Of the over forty plays Aristophanes wrote during his lifetime only eleven survive to this day of which five are collected together here in this volume."The Wasps" is a play which satirizes the Athenian general Cleon, a popular contemporary demagogue, and the Athenian courts which empower him. "The Thesmophoriazusae" depicts a gathering of women at an annual festival as they plan to enact their revenge upon Euripides for his unflattering depiction of their sex. "The Frogs" relates the journey of the god Dionysus to the underworld, who wishes to improve the state of Athenian tragedy by bringing Euripides back from the dead. In "The Clouds" we find a lampoon of contemporary Athenian intellectuals, most notably Socrates. Lastly in "Plutus", Aristophanes employs the god of wealth, Plutus, to satirize the political economics of Athenian society. This edition follows the prose translations of The Athenian Society and is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Book excerpt: This book is a translation of Aristophanes' play 'The Frogs' by W. J. Hickie, which tells the story of the god Dionysus and his quest to find a great poet to restore the glory of Athens. The play is a satirical commentary on the state of Greek poetry at the time, and a celebration of the power of literature to effect social change. The book is a valuable contribution to the study of Greek drama, and a reminder of the importance of literature in shaping our understanding of the world around us. Book excerpt: Flying to Heaven to demand an end to war, building Cloudcuckooland in the sky, descending to Hades to retrieve a dead tragedian - such were the cosmic missions on which Aristophanes, the father of comedy, sent his heroes of the classical Athenian stage. The wit, intellectual bravura, political clout and sheer imaginative power of Aristophanes' quest dramas have profoundly influenced humorous literature and satire, but this volume, which originated at an international conference held at the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama at Oxford University in 2004, is the first interdisciplinary study of their seminal contribution to the evolution of comic performance. Interdisciplinary essays by specialists in Classics, Theatre, and Modern Literatures trace the international performance history of Aristophanic comedy, and its implication in aesthetic and political controversies, from antiquity to the twenty-first century. The story encompasses Jonson's satire, Cromwell's Ireland, German classicism, British Imperial India, censorship scandals in France, Greece and South Africa, Brechtian experiments in East Berlin, and musical theatre from Gilbert and Sullivan to Stephen Sondheim.

Book excerpt: "There is no beast, no rush of fire, like woman so untamed. She calmly goes her way where even panthers would be shamed." ― Aristophanes, Lysistrata Lysistrata is an ancient Greek comedy by Aristophanes. It tells the story of the extraordinary mission of women to end a three-decade conflict- the Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata, the title character, leads the women of the warring Greek city-states in a sex strike in hopes to persuade their husbands to stop the fighting. The older women of Athens seized control of Acropolis and the state treasury in it for, without money, men cannot fund their war. Old men arrived with woods and burning coals. They plan to smoke the women out of the Acropolis but a group of old women throws water at them, putting out their fires. A man who is desperate for sex appears and pleads. His wife teases and leads him on but leaves him hanging to torture him further. Several other men tried to get through the women but none succeeded Will this method prove to be effective in ending a war? Add to cart and get your copy now!
