Book excerpt: This is the centerpiece of the Ron Carter Library. (He refers to it as "THE book" when talking to his students) While other bass lesson books teach you arco techniques and how to audition for a classical orchestra, this book is completely different. It shows you how the bass functions, and the hand positions and locations on the instrument so you can find those beautiful notes too. And it has QR codes that link to video demos so you can watch the Maestro play the exercises himself. With this book you can do what Carter does every night. Play rhythm changes all the time, make wonderful blues choruses, or in the Maestro's case, play Little Waltz for 25 years. And have it be new and fresh every time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With twenty-three Grammy wins, Chick Corea is a legendary jazz figure and one of the most prolific and influential contemporary pianists of our time. He has produced hundreds of releases in multiple genres over five decades, and he is one of the hardest-working musicians in the industry, with a yearly tour schedule of over 250 international concerts. He has authored multiple books and instructional works, and many regard him today as easily one of the most influential musicians of his generation. Experiencing Chick Corea looks at the full span of Corea’s career, decade by decade, touching on the vast array of musical styles he engaged, from his initial work with Herbie Mann to his free explorations with Circle. It touches on his arguably most influential album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, his involvement with Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew and subsequent efforts as pioneer in the fusion scene with Return to Forever, his duo collaborations, classical outings, and his acoustic and trio work in the 1990s and beyond. Learning how to listen to Corea is itself a bit of a magic carpet ride, given the range of material he has created and the breadth and depth of that work. Experiencing Chick Corea introduces this American Icon to audiences beyond the domain of jazz fans already familiar with this work. Monika Herzig places Corea’s creations in their historical and social contexts so any music lover can gain a fuller understanding of the incredible range of his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relatively unknown during her life, the artist, filmmaker, and writer Kathleen Collins emerged on the literary scene in 2016 with the posthumous publication of the short-story collection Whatever Happened to Interracial Love? Said Zadie Smith, “To be this good and yet to be ignored is shameful, but her rediscovery is a great piece of luck for us.” That rediscovery continues in Notes from a Black Woman’s Diary, which spans genres to reveal the breadth and depth of the late author’s talent. The compilation is anchored by more of Collins’s striking short stories, which explore the ways in which relationships both are formed and come undone. Also collected here is the work Collins wrote for the screen and stage, including the screenplay of her pioneering film Losing Ground and the script for The Brothers, which powerfully illuminate the particular joys, challenges, and heartbreaks rendered by the African American experience. And finally, it is in Collins’s raw and prescient diaries that her nascent ideas about race, gender, marriage, and motherhood first play out on the page. By turns empowering, exuberant, sexy, and poignant, Notes from a Black Woman’s Diary is a brilliant compendium of the works of an inimitable talent, and a rich portrait of a writer hard at work.

This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Second Quintet" -- the Miles Davis Quintet of the mid-1960s -- was one of the most innovative and influential groups in the history of the genre. Each of the musicians who performed with Davis--saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams--went on to a successful career as a top player. The studio recordings released by this group made profound contributions to improvisational strategies, jazz composition, and mediation between mainstream and avant-garde jazz, yet most critical attention has focused instead on live performances or the socio-cultural context of the work. Keith Waters' The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-68 concentrates instead on the music itself, as written, performed, and recorded. Treating six different studio recordings in depth--ESP, Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, and Filles de Kilimanjaro--Waters has tracked down a host of references to and explications of Davis' work. His analysis takes into account contemporary reviews of the recordings, interviews with the five musicians, and relevant larger-scale cultural studies of the era, as well as two previously unexplored sources: the studio outtakes and Wayne Shorter's Library of Congress composition deposits. Only recently made available, the outtakes throw the master takes into relief, revealing how the musicians and producer organized and edited the material to craft a unified artistic statement for each of these albums. The author's research into the Shorter archives proves to be of even broader significance and interest, as Waters is able now to demonstrate the composer's original conception of a given piece. Waters also points out errors in the notated versions of the canonical songs as they often appear in the main sources available to musicians and scholars. An indispensible resource, The Miles Davis Quintet Studio Recordings: 1965-1968 is suited for the jazz scholar as well as for jazz musicians and aficionados of all levels.

Book excerpt: This book was written with one purpose in mind: to improve your bass playing skill in 24 clear lessons. Each of the exercises featured in (title is based on solid music theory concepts and structured academic approaches. The book contains etudes grounded in common (and not so common) chord tonalities written in melodic form. They are all geared to teach when to play the right notes at the right time. Each lesson builds on the previous one to introduce increasingly more sophisticated concepts and techniques. This approach enables the bass student to polish his/her reading skills and technique simultaneously. A focus on reading requires players to find more accurate left-hand positions and fingerings to play the notes as they are written. Reading brings together mind, body, and instrument, thus resulting in better playing. By studying this book, the bass student will find that better technique will be coupled with greater expressiveness. We all seek the ability to play with freedom and artistry. The better you can play, the better you will express the art that is within you.
