From her troubled teenage years in a state institution where her coping behaviors were interpreted as defiant and oppositional, to her years in a Christian community where her behaviors were misunderstood, to a brief marriage and the birth of her three sons, Judy has emerged as a strong voice on the autism spectrum. This book shows Endow's resilience, courage, hard work, and sheer will power. Paper Words shows visually on the printed page how Endow, a highly visual thinker, translates her thoughts into words.

Book excerpt: "Working 13 years with students who are diagnosed with sever autism, my colleagues and I have often wanted to visualize and better understand what our students were seeing, feeling and thinking. Judy Endow's Painted Words takes us on a picturesque journey into the mind of one autistic person through her vivid and breathtaking paintings and sculptures while also explaining in detailed description and poetry what she sees and, via sensory, how she experiences it. Helpful suggestions for working with individuals on the spectrum open a treasure box of insights. Having this 'backstage pass' into autism will be priceless for educators, parents and individuals on the autism spectrum."--Joanna L. Keating-Velasco, educator, and author of A is for Autism, F is for Friend: A Kid's Book for Making Friends with a Child Who Has Autism. "Judy Endow combines her art, poetry, and prose to create a thought-provoking book of self-discovery that viscerally captures the essence of a world which only few experience- a world of subtle beauty that can turn too bright, loud, and overwhelming. The practical advice at the end of each chapter has helped me understand and be a better parent to my autistic child. Painted Words is a book to read, reread and share with other parents, educators, physicians, and therapists so they too can learn to appreciate the autistic experience. I'm buying it for all of my friends!." --Debra Hosseini, author of The Art of Autism: Shifting PerceptionsI. "Judy gives us a compelling view into her world through words crafted on the page, connected with images that illustrate her experience of being autistic. She encourages the neurotypical world to change their perceptions and assumptions about people with autism, to ask ourselves questions. Painted Words challenges our thinking, leading us to examine beyond what we see on the surface. Your view of autism is bound to shift after experiencing autism through Judy's words and paintings." - Maureen Bennie, Director, Autism Awareness Centre, Inc.

This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outsmarting Explosive Behavior - A Visual System of Support and Intervention for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders - is a visual model designed to help decrease, and in some cases eliminate, explosive behavior. The model's positive approach to explosive behavior uniquely eliminates the need or temptation to assign blame-to oneself or others-that otherwise often complicates the process of controlling explosive behavior. In a fold-out poster-style format, four train cars represent the stages in the cycle of explosive behavior: Starting Out Picking up Steam Point of No Return Explosion. Using this train metaphor, the parent/facilitator and student (older individuals can do it more independently) take a close look at each stage in the process and using stop, go and special stop/yield signs, identify triggers, design positive interventions to prevent the train from starting out in the first place and preventing a car from moving to the next stage. The ultimate goal is to prevent the individual train cars from hooking up, causing a runaway train ending with an explosion. The three-piece package contains: a book for facilitators that explains the model a large poster-size visual showing the train model with ready-made parts that can be personalized a workbook for the individual with AS designed to draw out the personalized interventions that will make the model work. Though designed to encourage participation by the person with explosive behavior, positive results are seen even when the model is implemented on behalf of someone unable to actively participate, such as nonreaders.
