Book excerpt: This book presents a selection of case studies of pioneers in arts education who were working in the United Kingdom in the period 1890 to 1950. Focusing on music, drama, and visual arts and crafts, the editors and contributors examine the impact these individuals had on developing innovative approaches to these subject areas and how they drew on perspectives that emphasised the need for children’s self-expression. The chapters offer an analysis of the pioneers’ beliefs and values, with a particular emphasis on their ideological positions about identity, nation, and what constituted ‘good taste’. The book further examines how their ideas were disseminated, in so doing interrogating the concept of ‘influence’ in educational theory and practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In schools from one end of the country to the other, Ella Jenkins and her work are known by thousands upon thousands of music teachers, music program directors, and (not the least important) by tens of thousands of children. Over the past seven years, Ella Jenkins has conducted hundreds of rhythm workshops in school / assemblies, in specialized music programs, at music educators and camping conventions, and on her weekly Chicago television program. Much of her work has been available to the schools on six long-playing records issued by Folkways. During these years, many teachers and parents have asked for a book of the songs that Ella Jenkins uses in these programs. This is that book— the songs from Ella’s workshops, along with her own notes on how to integrate the songs in a planned music program in school or at home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores historical and philosophical connections between music, leisure, and education. Specifically, it considers how music learning, teaching, and participation can be reconceptualized in terms of leisure. Taking as its starting point the art of living and the ethical question of how one should live, the book engages a wide range of scholarship to problematize the place of non-professional music-making in historical and contemporary (Western) conceptions of the good life and the common good. Part I provides a general background on music education, school music, the work ethic, leisure studies, recreation, play, and conduct. Part II focuses on two significant currents of thought and activity during the Progressive Era in the United States, the settlement movement and the recreation movement. The examination demonstrates how societal concerns over conduct (the threat of leisure) and differing views on the purpose of music learning and teaching led to a fracturing between those espousing generalist and specialist positions. The four chapters of Part III take readers through considerations of happiness (eudaimonia) and the good life, issues of work-life balance and the play spirit, leisure satisfaction in relation to consumerism, individualism, and the common good, and finally, parenting logics in relation to extracurriculars, music learning, and serious leisure.
