Book excerpt: "Learn the traditional American craft of creating painted floor cloths and then experiment with fabrics and papers to create beautiful floor quilts and floor pages. These colorful, painted canvases were developed in Europe in the early 1400s, used as alternatives to carpets and for table coverings in homes and churches. Durable and decorative, they were used widely throughout the 1700s and 1800s until they were replaced by linoleum in the late 19th century. Today, homeowners enjoy them for their handcrafted, artisan appeal. With more than 200 color images, this book includes step-by-step instructions for making floor cloths, floor quilts, and floor pages, as well as a gallery of inspiring finished pieces in a wide range of styles. Employing modern techniques and materials, these projects are easy enough for beginners but will also appeal to crafters who want to expand their repertoire."--provided by Amazon.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional quilts serve many purposes over the course of a useful life. Beginning as a beautiful bed covering, a quilt may later function as a ground cover at picnics until years of wear relegate it to someone's ragbag for scrap uses. Observing this life cycle led authors John Forrest and Deborah Blincoe to the idea that quilts, like living things, have a natural history that can be studied scientifically. They explore that natural history through an examination of the taxonomy, morphology, behavior, and ecology of quilts in their native environment—the homes of humans who make, use, keep, and bestow them. The taxonomy proposed by Forrest and Blincoe is rooted in the mechanics of replicating quilts so that it can be used to understand evolutionary and genetic relationships between quilt types. The morphology section anatomizes normal and abnormal physical features of quilts, while the section on conception and birth in the life cycle discusses how the underlying processes of replication intersect with environmental factors to produce tangible objects. This methodology is applicable to many kinds of crafts and will be of wide interest to students of folklore, anthropology, and art history. Case studies of traditional quilts and their makers in the Catskills and Appalachia add a warm, human dimension to the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: or more than 150 years, Marshall Field's reigned as Chicago's leading department store, celebrated for its exceptional service, spectacular window displays, and fashionable merchandise. Few shoppers recalled its origins as a small dry goods business opened in 1852 by a New York Quaker named Potter Palmer. That store, eventually renamed Marshall Field and Company, weathered economic downturns, spectacular fires, and fierce competition to become a world-class retailer and merchandise powerhouse. Marshall Field sent buyers to Europe for the latest fashions, insisted on courteous service, and immortalized the phrase "give the lady what she wants." The store prided itself on its dazzling Tiffany mosaic dome, Walnut Room restaurant, bronze clocks, and a string of firsts including the first bridal registry and first book signing.
