Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract from Baptist Revival Fellowship We explore the Baptist Revival Fellowship’s history from its foundation in 1938. It began as a movement to promote spiritual renewal in the Baptist Union. However, it withdrew from its affiliation in 1972. It draws on denominational records, press reports, some writings of its leaders and also the fellowship archive. The movement had three phases of development, and a chapter is devoted to each of these. During its early development between 1938 and 1960, the BRF mainly emphasized personal spiritual renewal and prayer for revival. However, in the late fifties it moved into more fundamentalist territory. Between 1960 and 1966 came the charismatic renewal and the prominence of Reformed theology. This led to renewed impetus and serious engagement with contemporary Baptist debates. The final phase was between 1966 and 1971 when the BRF adopted a policy of secession from the BU. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones had significant influence from the late fifties onwards. The BRF left the BU in reaction to a Christological controversy between 1971 and 1972.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 9 January 2013 Dr. Ian M. Randall celebrated his sixty-fifth birthday. For this occasion, some friends and colleagues presented him with a Festschrift which reflects his achievements as a church historian with a particular interest in the Evangelical movement and spirituality. It also mirrors his involvement with theological training in central and eastern Europe. Over the last twenty years Dr. Randall has also established himself as a leading historian of the Baptist churches in Europe. The contributions to Grounded in Grace interact with his areas of interest: Baptists, the Anabaptist movement, Evangelicalism and spirituality. This book makes a valuable contribution to thinking in all these areas. Scholars, pastors, other church leaders and students will profit hugely from it. It contains a short biography and a bibliography of Ian’s publications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional evangelical theology, with its emphasis on individual responsibility and the independence of faith communities, has often failed to offer a robust ecclesial vision for the unity of Christ’s church. Engaging this reality, Dr. Oleksandr Geychenko seeks to provide a theological framework for understanding the ecclesiological nature of Ukrainian Baptist church associations. He traces the history and development of Baptist unions in Eastern Europe, examining associational practices and organisational structure, along with the theological language used to describe the role and purpose of such unions. In dialogue with the covenant theology of Paul S. Fiddes, he demonstrates that church associations should be viewed as more than pragmatic entities. Rather, they are ecclesial bodies embodying covenantal unity, committed to mutual care and participation in Christ’s mission to the world. While drawing from primary sources and ecclesial practices to provide a unique and significant contribution to local theology, this study bears relevance for engaging ecumenical relations across traditions and encouraging the unity of the broader global church.

Book excerpt: The doctrine of God is central to theology for it determines the way in which other regions of Christian doctrine are articulated, yet work on this topic in its own right has been occluded recently by treatments of the Trinity or divine passibility. This collection of specially commissioned essays presents major treatments of key themes in the doctrine of God, motivated by but not restricted to the work of Professor Paul S. Fiddes to whom it is offered as a Festschrift. It includes invigorating discussions of the biblical and non-biblical sources for the doctrine of God, and the section on 'Metaphysics and the Doctrine of God' examines some of the most important conceptual questions arising in contemporary theological debate about the being and nature of God, and God's relations to the world. The final section of the book on 'God and Humanity' will be highly relevant to scholars working in the fields of theological anthropology, moral and political theology, on inter-faith relations, on theology and literature, or who are interested in the impact of contemporary science on the doctrine of God. The introduction relates the essays in the book to the work of Professor Fiddes and to wider debates in Christian doctrine. This volume brings together a team of internationally distinguished scholars from a wide range of theological, philosophical, and religious perspectives, and it will stimulate fresh thinking and new debate about this most central of topics in Christian theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptists are a major group of Christians with a worldwide presence. Originating in the English Puritan-Separatist tradition of the 17th century, Baptists proliferated in North America, and through missionary work from England, Europe, and North America, they have established churches, associations, unions, missions, and alliances in virtually every country. They are among the most highly motivated evangelists of the Christian gospel, employing at present in excess of 7,000 domestic and overseas missionaries. Important characteristics of the Baptists across their history are: the authority of the Scriptures, individual accountability before God, the priority of religious experience, religious liberty, separation of church and state, congregational independence, and a concern for the social implications of the gospel. Baptists recognize a twofold ministry (deacons and pastors) or a threefold order (deacons, elders, pastors). Historical Dictionary of the Baptists, Third Edition expands upon the second edition with an updated chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important events, doctrines, and the church founders, leaders, and other prominent figures who have made notable contributions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is offered in admiration of and in gratitude for the work of Ernest Charles Lucas. The title of the volume acknowledges Ernest's particular areas of interest and expertise. The word wisdom comes first for two reasons: firstly because the Bible's Wisdom literature is a particular love about which Ernest has published a number of books, and secondly because wisdom is a characteristic of the man. Several of the contributions to this volume pick up the theme of biblical wisdom, while others touch on the practical application of a wisdom shaped by the Scriptures to vital contemporary issues. The second word of the title, science, reflects both Ernest's first career as a research bio-chemist and his interest as a theologian in exploring the relationship between science and faith. This area of interest is reflected in a number of the contributions to this collection, including Ernest's passionate interest in and concern about climate change. The final words of the title are and the Scriptures. Ernest has, at one time or another, taught every part of the Bible and retained a keen interest in the discipline of Biblical Studies. Once again, this is reflected in some of the contributions. There are other aspects to Ernest Lucas and among them is a love of sport, especially cricket. And so the collection ends with a reflection on this wonderful pastime.
