Book excerpt: Doris Stokes, perhaps the greatest medium of recent times, astonished the world with the amazing accuracy of her psychic revelations. During her lifetime she worked tirelessly to reunite the bereaved and their loved ones, and helped bring joy and happiness to thousands of people. This second collection of her bestselling books brings together many more of her remarkable and moving experiences. In Innocent Voices In My Ear, Doris tells of her special relationship with children and her psychic communications with children of every age; from the heroic young men of the Falklands War, to the sixteen-year-old hostage of a ruthless gunman and the tragic stars who died too young: John Lennon, Marc Bolan and Richard Beckinsale. Whispering Voices recalls the extraordinary, sometimes amusing and often emotional situations she has found herself in; of how her gift brought her into contact with famous names such as Princess Anne and Freddie Starr, but also the ordinary folk who inspired her with their courage, and to whom she offered a new sense of hope.

Book excerpt: How women around the world are leading powerful change Women's progress is global progress. Where there is an increase in women's university enrollment rates, women's earnings, and maternal health, and a reduction in violence against women, we see more prosperous communities, better educated, healthier families, and the preservation of equal human rights. Yet globally, women remain the most consistently under-utilized resource. Vital Voices calls for and makes possible transformative leadership around the world. In Vital Voices, CEO Alyse Nelson shares the stories of remarkable, world-changing women, as well as the story of how Vital Voices was founded, crossing lines that typically divide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961. In the fifty years since, nearly 200,000 Americans have served in 139 countries, providing technical assistance, promoting a better understanding of American culture, and bringing the world back to the United States. In Voices from the Peace Corps: Fifty Years of Kentucky Volunteers, Angene Wilson and Jack Wilson, who served in Liberia from 1962 to 1964, follow the experiences of volunteers as they make the decision to join, attend training, adjust to living overseas and the job, make friends, and eventually return home to serve in their communities. They also describe how the volunteers made a difference in their host countries and how they became citizens of the world for the rest of their lives. Among many others, the interviewees include a physics teacher who served in Nigeria in 1961, a smallpox vaccinator who arrived in Afghanistan in 1969, a nineteen-year-old Mexican American who worked in an agricultural program in Guatemala in the 1970s, a builder of schools and relationships who served in Gabon from 1989 to 1992, and a retired office administrator who taught business in Ukraine from 2000 to 2002. Voices from the Peace Corps emphasizes the value of practical idealism in building meaningful cultural connections that span the globe.

One of the most highly acclaimed and best-selling authors of our time now gives us a book that charts the history of his own enchantment with story--from his own books to those of Blake, Milton, Dickens, and the Brothers Grimm, among others--and delves into the role of story in education, religion, and science. At once personal and wide-ranging, Daemon Voices is both a revelation of the writing mind and the methods of a great contemporary master, and a fascinating exploration of storytelling itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovator in contemporary thought on economic and political development looks here at decline rather than growth. Albert O. Hirschman makes a basic distinction between alternative ways of reacting to deterioration in business firms and, in general, to dissatisfaction with organizations: one, “exit,” is for the member to quit the organization or for the customer to switch to the competing product, and the other, “voice,” is for members or customers to agitate and exert influence for change “from within.” The efficiency of the competitive mechanism, with its total reliance on exit, is questioned for certain important situations. As exit often undercuts voice while being unable to counteract decline, loyalty is seen in the function of retarding exit and of permitting voice to play its proper role. The interplay of the three concepts turns out to illuminate a wide range of economic, social, and political phenomena. As the author states in the preface, “having found my own unifying way of looking at issues as diverse as competition and the two-party system, divorce and the American character, black power and the failure of ‘unhappy’ top officials to resign over Vietnam, I decided to let myself go a little.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices of Oman is a collection of eyewitness accounts of the most significant event of modern Omani history, the Omani Renaissance of 1970, which transformed a tent-in-the-desert culture into a modern urban state. The stories told in the 15 interviews contained in this work show the human dimension of a large historical change. Whatever cultural ground the reader may or may not share with these individuals, these stories show in poignant detail how we are all alike and how we are all different. History is the glue that holds a culture together, and Oman's past is filled with periods of glorious achievement that contribute to the contemporary Omani's sense of continuity and cultural identity. In the twentieth century the definition of history expanded to include, not just the exploits of the famous and powerful but also the stories of "everyday" people. This large group, the overwhelming majority of any culture, in the past had no voice in the historical narrative. Voices of Oman draws from a diverse cross-section of society to tell the story of the Omani Renaissance in the words of those who lived the transition.
