Book excerpt: This book concerns life in the twenty-five years before and during the second world war. Born in 1922, my first ten years were very happy years. Things changed with the sudden death of my father. Because he was a vicar, the family had to leave the vicarage in six weeks with no home to go to and very little money. To help my mother, her three widowed sisters (the aunts) came on the scene. The only security, away from this merry-go-round of our family life, was in boarding school and then the services. My brother in the Army and I in the WRNS. I was a plotter and worked in operations rooms at several naval bases. The last one was shortly before the invasion began. I was sent to Fort Southwick, near Portsmouth. I worked here, in the underground, steel lined, plotting room of 'combined headquarters' as 'Operation Overlord' unfolded in miniature on the plotting table in front of me. When the invasion was safely under way, I was posted to 'tactical anti-submarine training' in Scotland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published around the world to great acclaim. A tender, beautifully told, award-winning novel by New Zealand's most loved writer for children. Frankie Parsons is twelve going on old man: an apparently sensible, talented boy with a drumbeat of worrying questions steadily gaining volume in his head. Are the smoke alarm batteries flat? Does the cat, and therefore the rest of the family, have worms? Is the kidney-shaped spot on his chest actually a galloping cancer? Most of the significant people in Frankie’s world – his father, his brother and sister, his great-aunts, his best friend Gigs – seem gloriously untroubled by worry. Only Ma takes seriously his catalogue of persistent anxieties; only Ma listens patiently to his 10pm queries. But of course, it is Ma who is the cause of the most worrying question of all, the one that Frankie can never bring himself to ask. Then the new girl arrives at school and has questions of her own: relentless, unavoidable questions. So begins the unravelling of Frankie Parson’s carefully controlled world. So begins the painful business of fronting up to the unpalatable: the ultimate 10pm question. The 10pm Question is an award-winning novel which defies all age categories. It does so with a sparkling wit and an operatic cast of characters so delightful and maddening they become dear to us.

It's early April in the small English village of Finch. Lori Shepherd's husband and sons are spending Easter break camping, and Lori is perfectly happy to be left at home with Bess, spared a week of roughing it with a curious toddler. The two attend a village events committee meeting and Lori is astonished when the elderly, soft-spoken widow Mrs. Annabelle Craven stands to make an announcement: she's decided to hold a quilting bee in the old schoolhouse. At the quilting bee, Lori ends up seated beside Mrs. Craven, delighted at the opportunity to learn more about her neighbor's life in the village of Old Cowerton. But dear, sweet Mrs. Craven's stories reveal a startling secret about her first husband's death. With Aunt Dimity's advice, Lori sets out to learn the truth about what the residents of Old Cowerton refer to as the "widow's curse"--and the deeper she digs, the more horrifying the tale becomes, until she discovers the most astounding revelation of all. Watch out for Atherton's latest, Aunt Dimity and the King's Ransom, coming out in July 2018!

While exploring the attic in her cottage near the small English village of Finch, Lori Shepherd makes an extraordinary discovery: a gleaming gold and garnet bracelet that had once belonged to Aunt Dimity. When Lori shows the garnet bracelet to Aunt Dimity, it awakens poignant memories of a doomed romance in Aunt Dimity’s youth in London after the War. Regretfully, Aunt Dimity asks Lori to do what she could not: return the bracelet to her unsuccessful suitor—setting Lori off on an adventure through London—and through history—to put a piece of Aunt Dimity’s past to rest. In the meantime, a new family has moved to Finch. The villagers are thrilled because their new neighbors are avid metal detectorists. Metal detectors soon become all the rage in Finch and the villagers unearth a lot of rubbish (some of it quite embarrassing) before one of them stumbles upon a trinket that could hold the key to the origin of Aunt Dimity’s bracelet. Is the bracelet a priceless and protected national treasure? Was Aunt Dimity’s lovesick suitor a common thief? If so, how will Lori break the news to Aunt Dimity? And what will she do with the bracelet? As Lori searches for answers, she discovers an unexpected link between the buried treasure in the village and the treasure buried in Aunt Dimity’s heart. Watch out for Nancy Atherton's latest, Aunt Dimity and the King's Ransom, coming in July 2018 from Viking!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who could drown a goldfish or talk directly to God? Use a jigsaw as a template for china restoration? End up in the village millpond? Who planned for future blindness with military precision and sampled many of the different religions? The answer to all these questions was Giddy Aunt Lillian. She made a bank manager carry her money to a rival bank and then checked on their security. She created a pets’ graveyard in the back garden, from which she wanted to start a new business. Fairies ‘really did exist’ at the bottom of her garden and she was the bane of all the churches in the vicinity. She was every child’s dream relative but every family’s nightmare. Great-aunt Lillian was blissfully unaware of the chaos she left in her wake and was the talk of the village who found her adventures a constant source of gossip.Oh My Giddy Aunt! is set in a gentler time, before the onslaught of health and safety rules and regulations or political correctness. It was a time when eccentricity was celebrated and social services was in its infancy. Today Lillian would be investigated and declared insane – and the family probably would have been advised to put her away. Her niece Jojo was much beleaguered by her unconventional aunt and was often innocently drawn into her schemes, but the magic stayed with Jojo as she went on to write this book – it is narrated from her point of view. The book is a laugh-out-loud read that will appeal to readers over 45 and resonate with anyone who has a quirky relative themselves.
