Book excerpt: In the Truth About Dying, Pastor Gib Niswander shares his experiences as a Police Officer, and Minister, and reveals years of research. From Police Officer to Pastor, thirty years of helping others face the tragedies of life left many unanswered questions in the mind of this former Police Captain turned Minister. Many have looked to the Police Officer, and later the Pastor, for answers. In his heart, he needed the answers as desperately as they who asked. Looking into their faces and knowing the emptiness they felt would be the driving force behind years of researching The Truth About Dying.

Book excerpt: In 1968, Joseph is concerned he will be selected in the draft lottery and sent to Army boot camp like his brother-in-law. He left home at the early age of fifteen years old to escape a troubled family life, drug addicted mother and an abusive alcoholic step-father. Before his break away, Joseph and his mother lived for several years moving to different locations for safety. Joseph's living conditions contributed to his dislike of learning, thereby he dropped out of high school and decided to join the Navy to make a better life for himself during the Vietnam Era. His first experiences in boot camp and training are unpleasant reminders of his abusive past but later during this decade of adventures in the Navy, Joseph becomes aware that his journey will be filled with new discoveries and loaded with life choices. He learns from many positive male role models during his travels, but John McCain remains his favorite. He shares a brief romance with an old friend in Barcelona, Spain before he returns to the United States after three long cruises on the USS John F. Kennedy. What life lessons will Joseph discover? Will he make the right decisions? Nearing the end of his enlistment, Joseph decides to leave Jacksonville, Florida and the United States Navy with tremendously more than he started with a decade ago. Married, a college graduate, two daughters and almost a lifetime of choices and education packed into his naval career. Joseph will take his family and experience, move back to New Orleans begin his new civilian life. Joseph still has memories of his painful early years and even has new sorrows from this Navy adventure, but he has a reasonably optimistic view of his future. Many of Joseph's friends and others encouraged him not to leave military service, but he knows the time has come to move on to his many more adventures ahead.

At the age of 34 he left his teaching job at the school (in Monmouth, Indiana,) and joined the United States Navy. While he was gone, from 1942-1945 the school held his job open. School officials promised that his teaching job would still be waiting for him when he eventually returned from the war. He traveled with the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist First Mate to many countries, just a few of them being: Bougainville, Guadalcanal, Hawaii, The New Hebrides, New Zealand, Pago Pago, the Panama Canal, Philippines and Samoa. He participated in training exercises on islands such as: Efati and Espirito Santos prior to being sent to Bougainville. Mate Robinson also served (and wore stars) for his service in the battlefields at both Pivi Village and Pivi forks. The opening Biography section explores the permanent relocation of his entire family from Belfast, Ireland to their new residence located at 2515 E. Riverside Drive in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was in the year of (1910.) It delves deeply into his other immediate family members giving explanations of how their relationships intertwined. Outlines of Normans many educational accomplishments prior to those war years appear. It was his long time girl friend (of 9 years, Mary Katherine Mitchell) that waited so patiently for him to return after W.W. II in Indianapolis, Indiana. You will be reading much more about their bitter/sweet relationship in the later part of the book. This book gives some glimpses interspersed with family stories, pictures, weather conditions and recipes describing the everyday routine daily life of those war years from 1941-1945. Narratives of the letters that flew back and forth with his family members, church friends and neighbors while he was serving are also included.
