It outlines the safe and proper installation and repair of all auto glass used in domestic and foreign motor vehicles and off road equipment. The Guide is written by two experts who have 42 total years of experience in the auto glass industry and 36 years of training experience in both technical and customer service. The Guide is written with the student in mind. It includes easy, understandable step by step instructions illustrated with color photography, diagrams and tables. It aids the instructor with learning quizzes and exams. In the event of an accident, auto glass installed incorrectly can result in serious injury and possible death for the vehicle occupants. Correct auto glass installation: . enhances vehicle performance . aids in proper accessory operation . contributes to safety equipment deployment . Improves vehicle appearance . Provides for the customers' comfort and safety. This Guide not only helps the student learn how to put in auto glass but also teaches why the correct procedures are important. Improper auto glass installation can endanger the vehicle occupants and cause undue liability exposure to the installation shop. This Guide teaches the proper procedures according to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and the ANSI/AGRSS Safety Standard. Auto glass installation is too important to the well being of the consumer and to the long term success of the repair shop to put the responsibility into the hands of others. Auto glass technicians and auto collision professionals must maintain the highest standard of safety glazing. This Guide aims to assist in that endeavor."

Book excerpt: The art and science of glass engineering, specifically applied to automotive projects, are not at all commonplace. Although windshields, side and backlites seem to be obvious parts of any car, truck, or bus, designing, sourcing, and manufacturing them are unique challenges. From the business perspective, cost control makes the choice of the ideal supplier a vital decision, greatly impacting availability and production. From the technical standpoint, the most creative designs can be rendered impractical due to regulations, lack of economies of scale, or convoluted logistics. Glass Engineering: Design Solutions for Automotive Applications tackles all these variables using a no-nonsense, step-by-step approach. Written by Lyn R. Zbinden, a mechanical engineer and glass specialist, this book narrows the gap between the reader and a technical subject by using language that is easy to understand, a good variety of examples, and a series of invaluable reference design tables. With a career spanning over 30 years in the automotive industry, Lyn R. Zbinden breaks down complex concepts into “knowledge bites,” building up a solid base that both students and practitioners can profit from, and use on a regular basis, for years to come. Glass Engineering: Design Solutions for Automotive Applications addresses the theme of glass from the manufacturing stage to the design, installation, and warranty aspects. It also flags, along the way, the pitfalls and the important questions to ask. More importantly, it provides the reader with practical ways to solve the not-so-obvious problems associated with the use of automotive glass. Developed with the goal to offer effective training on the subject, this book is a must-have for those just starting to get acquainted with the world of automotive glass applications as well as those looking for the ultimate source of practical knowledge in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough industry analysis is of utmost importance for a study on the impact of technological changes on industry structure. This book evaluates the consequences of a vaguely chosen level of an industry analysis. Too broad a definition of the industry may disaggregate sub-industries, processing industries and international aspects. This is illustrated by revisiting an industry study upon which the dominant design model was based. Readers will see and understand the consequences of too broadly defined industries together with quantitative research approach can have. The book argues that the nature of the industry should define the level of the analysis. This is done by revisiting the flat glass industry study, on which Anderson and Tushman’s (1990) dominant design model is partly based. In their study Anderson and Tushman defined the flat glass industry based on four-digit SIC codes. It is argued that this definition was too broad and it disaggregated important sub-industries, processing industries and international aspects. This study uses more accurate analysis in five-digit SIC codes. The empirical findings of this study and Anderson and Tushman’s study are different. Their broader industry definition revealed only the flat glass industry not two sub-industries: plate glass and sheet glass. According to this study the nature of the industry should define the level of the analysis and performance parameter should defined be based on effectiveness instead of efficiency of the innovation. As a consequence of these clarifications this study regards contrary to Anderson and Tushman float glass as the dominant design.
