Book excerpt: BIKERS are ANIMALS 3 - On the Road by Paul Jamiol is the third in a series of children's books that brings youngsters into a world of cartoon animals who love to ride their motorcycles and be with their friends. In his first two books, the author introduced his cartoon animals on "cool" motorcycles to show children and their parents that those involved in motorcycling are intelligent and caring. In his third book, using detailed and vibrant illustrations, Jamiol takes children even further into his cartoon world with a riding adventure that is fun and which has his menagerie of riding critters planning and working together to make their ride possible. Their journey takes them from their homes and into the city, then they head out of the city and hit the open road for a ride to the mountains. Their destination is a cabin on a lake, courtesy of one of their riding buddies, for an overnight stay. As with an actual motorcycle ride, there will be different roads traveled and stops along the way. This adventure will expand a child's imagination with a unique vision of a group of critters doing what they love to do most - ride their motorcycles with their friends. A child will feel that he or she is welcome to ride along with these critters, and will also learn that working together, respect and friendship are paramount with this cast of characters. This is not just a book for kids in families with motorcycles. It's for young ones everywhere who gaze at a passing rider on a motorcycle and are curious about what this "thing" rolling past is all about. Jamiol's characters run the gamut of the animal world as do their choices of motorcycles. They are young and old, and male and female. They like each other, respect each other, and have fun doing things together but are not afraid to do things on their own. Their independence stands out even in a large group. With Bikers are Animals 3 - On the Road, the message is clear... doing things together with friends, respecting who they are and not what they are, and riding down a road unafraid, are good things. For the child to get that message through a motorcycle ride that's totally fun, reinforces this message. The author encourages parents to join their kids on this ride and meet the characters. This is a reading adventure parents and children can share together, over and over again.

Book excerpt: BIKERS are ANIMALS 4 - Working and Riding by author/cartoonist Paul Jamiol is the 4th in a series of children's books that bring young readers into a world of motorcycle-riding animals. In Jamiol's first two books, he introduced his cartoon menagerie on "cool" motorcycles, showing children and parents that those involved in motorcycling are intelligent and caring. In his third, the characters from BAA1 go on a riding adventure. Now, Jamiol has created 16 new, young characters who are the sons, daughters, grandkids, nieces, nephews and siblings of his adult characters. These engaging youngsters proudly introduce their adults and explain about their occupations, and then each goes riding with his/her adult, where it's all about bonding and having fun. In what has become his trademark style of vivid illustrations and attention to detail, Jamiol creates a stunning world for the young reader, again bringing a positive message along for the ride. Paul Jamiol, an avid motorcyclist, has been cartooning and illustrating for over 40 years and has been recognized for his work locally, nationally and internationally. His cartoons and illustrations have been featured in newspapers, in magazines and on the worldwide web. He produced his Classic Motorcycle Calendar(c) for over 12 years and he was commissioned to create a 30-ft mural, Women in Motorcycling, for the opening of the AMA Heritage Museum. Paul has written and illustrated his Bikers are Animals series of children's book for children who love animals and have an interest in motorcycles. His first two books introduced 25 characters; his 3rd takes them on an adventure. His fourth and latest introduces 16 new younger animals into the mix. His intention is to spark something in young readers that will get them excited about motorcycles. He also hopes to shake, early on, the adult refrain that "bikers are animals."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to compare the shared cultural tenets of ancient warbands and outlaw biker gangs. It argues that the values of hyper-masculinity can be traced from the former into the contemporary environment of the latter: codes of honour, loyalty and bravery have prioritised small groups of males over women and other men, creating a history of hyper-masculinity that shows little sign of stopping. Indeed, Outlaw Bikers and Ancient Warbands: Hyper-Masculinity and Cultural Continuity argues that such hyper-masculine culture can be found in many male groups such as the police, military and sports, and that if we want to understand hyper-masculinity and face it as a society then we need to recognize that outlaw bikers are a reflection of behavior that has a very long tradition. This pioneering work explores these issues from ancient times and into the future.

What inspires people to take on the different causes of non-human animals? How do people vary in their views on the rights of animals? Students will be encouraged to think critically as they discover there are no black and white answers to these and other questions. This fascinating collection of profiles is written by and about those who are actively involved in the pro/con aspects of the animal rights and animal welfare movements. Over 35 individual stories written by those who are on the frontlines, fighting for what they believe, bring the controversies surrounding animal rights and welfare into sharp focus. The same interview questions were asked of each participant. Readers will enjoy the personal element of these profiles, while discovering the similarities and differences among those involved in these movements. An introduction to the volume provides students with the definitions and background information they need to clearly understand the entries that follow and to encourage them to question what they read and to draw their own conclusions.

Book excerpt: WILDLAND RECREATION THE AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING THE ECOLOGICAL IMPACTS OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN WILDLANDS This third edition provides an updated and thorough examination of the ecological impacts of recreational use on wildlands and the best management practices to employ in places where recreation and preservation of natural conditions are important – and often conflicting – objectives. Covering the latest research, this edition provides detailed information about the environmental changes that result from recreational use. It describes spatial patterns of impact and trends over time, and then explores the factors that determine the magnitude of impact, including the amount of use, the type and behavior of use, and the environmental durability. Numerous examples, drawn from parks and recreation areas around the world, give readers an insight into why certain areas are more heavily damaged than others, and demonstrate the techniques available to mitigate damage. The book incorporates both the first-hand experience of the authors and an exhaustive review of the world’s literature on the subject. Boxes provide quick access to important material, and further resources are referenced in an extensive bibliography. Essential reading for all park and protected area management professionals, this book is also a useful textbook for upper division undergraduate and graduate students on recreation ecology and recreation management courses.
