For many of us, life and death run second to major GAA events. Blood, Sweat, Triumph & Tears looks back at some of the best moments from the sporting nation's favourite soap opera. It pays homage to the great players and people in Gaelic football, hurling, ladies' football and camogie. And it glories in the classic victories and thrilling contests witnessed down the decades. Based on exclusive interviews with the greatest personalities in the GAA's rich history, and covering every county in Ireland, here is a unique insight into the passion and politics, the controversies and crises, the wisdom and wit and all the highs and lows of Ireland's national treasure. Full of entertaining anecdotes, inspirational incidents and epic encounters, Blood, Sweat, Triumph & Tears truly captures the magic of the GAA. 'A book to shorten the long winter nights for any GAA fan.' DERMOT EARLEY, Kildare legend 'Will bring back great memories for lovers of Gaelic Games.' KAROL MANNION

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black college football began during the nadir of African American life after the Civil War. The first game occurred in 1892, a little less than four years before the Supreme Court ruled segregation legal in Plessy v. Ferguson. In spite of Jim Crow segregation, Black colleges produced some of the best football programs in the country. They mentored young men who became teachers, preachers, lawyers, and doctors--not to mention many other professions--and transformed Black communities. But when higher education was integrated, the programs faced existential challenges as predominately white institutions steadily set about recruiting their student athletes and hiring their coaches. Blood, Sweat, and Tears explores the legacy of Black college football, with Florida A&M's Jake Gaither as its central character, one of the most successful coaches in its history. A paradoxical figure, Gaither led one of the most respected Black college football programs, yet many questioned his loyalties during the height of the civil rights movement. Among the first broad-based histories of Black college athletics, Derrick E. White's sweeping story complicates the heroic narrative of integration and grapples with the complexities and contradictions of one of the most important sources of Black pride in the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: This story is a biography of passion, perseverance, courage and destiny where a boy is suddenly transported onto a path that signifies a journey into manhood, empowering him to live up to some of the ideals he’d set for himself in an imagination stretched to serve God, family and country. It was high adventure being the son of a man educated by thousands of years of culture and tradition fighting for every breath of a brand-new tomorrow. With a sense of idealism and resilience Farooq would set his sights on a higher cause. A person can never become great unless they’re able to properly function under chaos. With many trials and tribulations as personal tutors, he had no choice but step out on faith and pave a better way for his family. His constitution anchored itself to the evolution of Yemen’s poetry. His manner was peaceful. With pain, purpose and rebellious hope he looked into his future with all the clarity of a crystal ball. He wasn’t the kind of boy looking to grow up living inside his father’s pockets. He would prepare himself for the music of tomorrow. His life had become a powerful soundtrack to an acoustic soul. So much to be had. So much to be cherished. So much to be thankful for. So much to know.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He, Mme Pelosy, and their defeatist friends in the Senate delude themselves that Jihad Islam can be defeated, by Reid's own admission. We would have to "defeat the ideology." I have shown that it cannot be destroyed, that is, politically defeated. But it can be suppressed, condemned, invalidated, outlawed, innervated, even redirected, if not destroyed. Any one of these alternative redirections of Islamo-fascism would constitute, not a defeat, which is a delusion, but a partial victory, which is the best we can hope for, since only an omnipotent Christ has the power to change men's hearts before their minds. A tripartite state of Kurds, Shiites, and Sunnis would be a partial victory. That state's goals can be humanitarian rather than materialistic, although such a mixed people would appreciate certain modern conveniences like ice, electricity, plumbing, modern medicine, clean water, comfortable housing, security, social comity. These are all extraneous of the glut of Western-style materialism. The point of my thesis is that only a delusional destruction can ever absolutely defeat the ideology once it is constructed in the minds of men. Therefore, victory resides in the acceptance, cooperative attainment, and enjoyment of these amenities of civilized humankind. We will leave when the Iraqi people, under their own self-protection, show a willingness to institute these changes in their culture. That route is for our own protection, for already there are formed up some two dozen terrorist training camps in this country, waiting for the signs of our weakness to heighten their violence and release death and chaos. These idolatrous villages are truly bulwarks of the enemy, and the insights being gained there will inspire and instruct God's soldiers wherever they seek to penetrate enemy strongholds.
