Book excerpt: HERO ON THREE CONTINENTS is a chronicle of a century with the protagonist Henry Brown participating in events both cataclysmic and personal, and interfacing with characters both famous and imaginary. From the jazz age of the 1920's to the war-torn 1940's, to the international crises of oil and terrorism in the 70's, this novel makes history intimate, the work of any epic. The world needs a hero, and Henry Brown is such a man. Maitland-Lewis demonstrates the importance of uncompromising research as well as the art of presenting material in a fast-flowing, enjoyable, "can't put it down" style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers an intriguing analysis of the famous Three Ws of West Indian Cricket who were born within seventeen months and a mile from each other near the Kensington Oval Cricket Ground in Bridgetown, Barbados. They were destined to become three of the greatest cricketers in the world who would eventually be knighted for their sparkling batting records and meritorious service to cricket and the society in general. The study traces their humble beginnings in colonial Barbados, their ascendancy in the Barbados and West Indian Cricket teams in an era of struggle for justice, democracy, equality, and majority rule in the British West Indies. Most of all the study focuses on the endless debate, which goes on in the cricket world as to who was the greatest among the three. This book is filled with facts, figures and statistics not easily found elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gideon Haigh's new book covers all the great figures and major issues of cricket, by collecting all his best writing about the game. There are profiles of players past and present - Bradman, Ranjitsinhji, Benaud and Sobers from the past, Steve Waugh, Shane Warne and Wasim Akram from the present. He covers the big issues in the game: sledging, match-fixing, Kerry Packer, Zimbabwe, umpiring. He writes about cricket's best writers - Swanton, C.L.R. James - and ponders the game's most halcyon and unique aspects: slow bowling, captaincy, the essence of good batting. Haigh has now established himself as one of the finest writers on the game - author of one acknowledged masterpiece, Mystery Spinner, a comic classic, Many a Slip - and one of its most most shrewd commentators, who gets widely reviewed both by the cricket media and the national press. This book is likely to attract the same attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discarded brick, a three season trilogy, in two volumes, is set in Africa, Europe and North America. It is about the travels and experiences of Emmanuel N. Mukanga who even in childhood, would be moved to a different location every three to five years. Born in the British Protectorate of Uganda, the changing political and economic fortunes of his post-independence homeland and region, led to thousands of his country people to flee and go look for greener pastures all over the world. This desire for a better and safer world, is a human desire and in Europe and North America, Emmanuel found people from other countries, in pursuit of happiness. Back home, not everyone was happy to co-exist with him. Fears and intrigue led to a family split, legal battles and irreconcilable differences. He and his siblings became a pariah to be avoided like the pest, The discarded Brick. Born in 1953, near the shores of Lake Victoria in Eastern Uganda, Emmanuel N. Mukanga was plucked from his parents at the age of three and taken to the Ugandan capital, Kampala. At age six, he was taken to a primary school, near Mbale in Eastern Uganda and at age nine transferred to Entebbe, former seat of the British Protectorate Government. At thirteen, he joined a prestigious boarding secondary school, after which he went to University to study the Arts. One of the reasons Idi Amin gave for expelling the 80,000 strong Indian Community from Uganda in 1972, was that, “they were milking the cow without feeding it,” which was not entirely true. He, who had no cow to milk, did not know that he too would have to leave his country of birth. He worked at Uganda Television, but in 1976, he fled Idi Amin’s Uganda, starting an odyssey that would take him to over 26 countries in Africa, Europe and North America. He interacted with many cultures, however, when it came to a denigration of his culture, at home, then a clash was inevitable. This awakened in him the question, “who are you, where do you come from and what do you stand for?” Cultural clashes, intrigue and legal battles follow. He has included an epilogue reflecting on his life and existence and tracing his origins among the Samia-Luhya, astride Kenya and Uganda. He started compiling this book in May 2009 and completed it in October 2020 during the great Covid 19 pandemic, and after George Floyd said twelve times, in less than 9 minutes, “Mama, I Can’t Breathe.”

Book excerpt: Christians desire to grow in their relationship with God. They want to flourish, to experience victory in their Christian lives. They want to live in the overcoming power that the cross provides. But they are stuck. They are like my friend, John, who works sixty hours per week, sits in two hours of traffic each day and carries the burdens of the world on his shoulders. He and his wife, Jenny, love each other, or at least they used to. They now spend their time together carting their kids to activities after driving through Taco Bell for dinner. Every week, John sits in the second row at church, listening to the pastor, and he and Jenny volunteer in the children’s church. But he told me last week that he is exhausted. On the surface, he has a good life, but deep down he is drowning. He has no real victory. How does someone like John stem the tide? How does he start living the victorious lifestyle Jesus came to offer? Many find the answer in promises of a magic pill, something that provides a quick fix. But such fixes don’t exist. The victory of God is an ongoing lifestyle while adopting and applying certain priorities that prepare and equip us for life. True victory comes in heaven and not on earth. And only the Spirit of God living through the believer based on God’s Word can give true victory. But there are basic principles that God has used throughout the centuries to encourage believers and give them victory. In this book, I’ve pinpointed nine principles and priorities that will help a believer live a victorious Christian life. They are: -victory in preparing for eternity -victory in experiencing God's love -victory in God's grace -victory in God’s sovereignty -victory in spending time with Jesus -victory in close relationships -victory in the local church -victory in rest -victory in healthy living These nine priorities will help you understand and apply principles that are simple, biblical, and time-tested to produce spiritual, emotional, and physical benefits. My aim is to stimulate you to live these biblical truths while allowing the Holy Spirit to transform you.
