Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1973, a generation of science and engineering students have learned vector calculus from Dr. Schey's Div, Grad, Curl, and All That. This book was written to help science and engineering students gain a thorough understanding of those ubiquitous vector operators: the divergence, gradient, curl, and Laplacian. The Second Edition preserves the text's clear and informal style, moderately paced exposition, and avoidance of mathematical rigor which have made it a successful supplement in a variety of courses, including beginning and intermediate electromagnetic theory, fluid dynamics, and calculus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every advanced undergraduate and graduate student of physics must master the concepts of vectors and vector analysis. Yet most books cover this topic by merely repeating the introductory-level treatment based on a limited algebraic or analytic view of the subject. Geometrical Vectors introduces a more sophisticated approach, which not only brings together many loose ends of the traditional treatment, but also leads directly into the practical use of vectors in general curvilinear coordinates by carefully separating those relationships which are topologically invariant from those which are not. Based on the essentially geometric nature of the subject, this approach builds consistently on students' prior knowledge and geometrical intuition. Written in an informal and personal style, Geometrical Vectors provides a handy guide for any student of vector analysis. Clear, carefully constructed line drawings illustrate key points in the text, and problem sets as well as physical examples are provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear algebra permeates mathematics, as well as physics and engineering. In this text for junior and senior undergraduates, Sadun treats diagonalization as a central tool in solving complicated problems in these subjects by reducing coupled linear evolution problems to a sequence of simpler decoupled problems. This is the Decoupling Principle. Traditionally, difference equations, Markov chains, coupled oscillators, Fourier series, the wave equation, the Schrödinger equation, and Fourier transforms are treated separately, often in different courses. Here, they are treated as particular instances of the decoupling principle, and their solutions are remarkably similar. By understanding this general principle and the many applications given in the book, students will be able to recognize it and to apply it in many other settings. Sadun includes some topics relating to infinite-dimensional spaces. He does not present a general theory, but enough so as to apply the decoupling principle to the wave equation, leading to Fourier series and the Fourier transform. The second edition contains a series of Explorations. Most are numerical labs in which the reader is asked to use standard computer software to look deeper into the subject. Some explorations are theoretical, for instance, relating linear algebra to quantum mechanics. There is also an appendix reviewing basic matrix operations and another with solutions to a third of the exercises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigorous introduction to calculus in vector spaces The concepts and theorems of advanced calculus combined withrelated computational methods are essential to understanding nearlyall areas of quantitative science. Analysis in Vector Spacespresents the central results of this classic subject throughrigorous arguments, discussions, and examples. The book aims tocultivate not only knowledge of the major theoretical results, butalso the geometric intuition needed for both mathematicalproblem-solving and modeling in the formal sciences. The authors begin with an outline of key concepts, terminology, and notation and also provide a basic introduction to set theory, the properties of real numbers, and a review of linear algebra. Anelegant approach to eigenvector problems and the spectral theoremsets the stage for later results on volume and integration.Subsequent chapters present the major results of differential andintegral calculus of several variables as well as the theory ofmanifolds. Additional topical coverage includes: Sets and functions Real numbers Vector functions Normed vector spaces First- and higher-order derivatives Diffeomorphisms and manifolds Multiple integrals Integration on manifolds Stokes' theorem Basic point set topology Numerous examples and exercises are provided in each chapter toreinforce new concepts and to illustrate how results can be appliedto additional problems. Furthermore, proofs and examples arepresented in a clear style that emphasizes the underlying intuitiveideas. Counterexamples are provided throughout the book to warnagainst possible mistakes, and extensive appendices outline theconstruction of real numbers, include a fundamental result aboutdimension, and present general results about determinants. Assuming only a fundamental understanding of linear algebra andsingle variable calculus, Analysis in Vector Spaces is anexcellent book for a second course in analysis for mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering majors at theundergraduate and graduate levels. It also serves as a valuablereference for further study in any discipline that requires a firmunderstanding of mathematical techniques and concepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Field Theory Concepts" is a new approach to the teaching and understanding of field theory. Exploiting formal analo- gies of electric, magnetic, and conduction fields and introducing generic concepts results in a transparently structured electomagnetic field theory. Highly illustrative terms alloweasyaccess to the concepts of curl and div which generally are conceptually demanding. Emphasis is placed on the static, quasistatic and dynamic nature of fields. Eventually, numerical field calculation algorithms, e.g. Finite Element method and Monte Carlo method, are presented in a concise yet illustrative manner.
