Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. The brutal occupation of Baltimore in 1861 by the Federal troops under Benjamin “Beast” Butler, would be the final straw for many Confederate leaning Marylanders. One such was Harry Gilmor, imprisoned for his political beliefs and his service in the Baltimore County Horse Guards, he was determined to join the Southern forces. As soon as he was released from prison he travelled as fast as possible to join the troops under Colonel Turner Ashby; by March 1862 he was commissioned as a captain of the Twelfth Virginia Cavalry. He set to his task with a passion earning much glory fighting under Jackson in the Valley campaign, even being entrusted with special missions by the great general himself. His military star was on the rise and he began to gain a sterling reputation as a cavalry commander often employed in scouting, raids and ambushes. He was in action at the Battle of Brandy Station, in the Shenandoah Valley and led the famous “Raid Round Baltimore” in 1864. Despite all his cunning and daring the tide of war turned against him and his Confederate comrades and he was captured in February 1865 in Hardy County. As a successful Confederate raider the Federal press had heaped calumnies upon him and his men, so after the war he wrote these memoirs to set the record straight. A dashing read of a famous Confederate cavalry officer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riding straight out of the pages of Western history, W. J. L. Sullivan arrives, hat firmly planted on his head, to tell in his own plain way about his time as a sergeant of the Texas Rangers. The years were 1889 to 1901, and there was lawlessness enough on the frontiers of Texas to occupy any able-bodied man with a horse, a six-shooter, and a hard-headed sense of decency and order. Rounding up cattle poachers, hanging loquacious murderers, leaping into border skirmishes, watching the odd culprit wriggle free through the "slick scheme" of an attorney, wrestling a buffalo and losing a horse in the process: Sullivan relates the events of his career with all the earnest candor, modest wit, and occasional homespun moralizing of a man with a story that has to be told. In his straight-spoken words we see the Texas rangers of yesterday, riding out under the legendary Captain Bill McDonald, whose famous adage, "One riot, one ranger," suggests the wild spirit and irrepressible toughness that Sullivan so amply documents. Compulsively readable, as eventful and dramatic as any novel, his book lets us watch history unfold in all its colorful, gritty detail against the raw frontier of nineteenth-century Texas. [From the University of Nebraska Library] Included in this Illustrated Edition of the 1909 Twelve Years in the Saddle are 13 original illustrations, rejuvenated.

Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack - 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. One of the shining lights of the Confederate war effort Nathan Bedford Forrest, was an iconoclast; militarily untrained at the outbreak of the Civil War he was to wield his cavalry command with innovative doctrines, effective strategies that confounded many Union commanders. Central to his success was his hard riding mounted artillery which provided him with a heavy punch to add to his mobility. Captain John Morton rose to the post of Forrest’s chief of artillery in 1864 after much service since joining the grey ranks in 1861. Many years after the end of his military service he set out to write a history of the unit he commanded, this volume is comprehensive, readable and very well-written. He charts all of the engagements and actions in which he and his men fought with detail and verve; however, the greatest insights are into the daily life of the Confederate raiders, their morale and anecdotes of his leader and his style of command. A Classic Confederate history.
