Book excerpt: Nestled in the rolling Border hills, at the meeting of the River Teviot and Slitrig Water, Hawick is deserving of its title as 'Queen o' a' the Borders'. Founded as a settlement in Norman times, it has survived English invasions, the lawlessness of the Border Reivers and the advent of the Industrial Revolution. This rich and vibrant heritage, which stretches back centuries, is reflected in the distinctive architecture of many of the town's buildings. Hawick has undergone remarkable changes in the past few decades - from the demise of traditional local trades to the closure of the Waverley Route railway line. Today, it is known across the world for its award winning Cashmere produce, its annual Common Riding and as a hotbed of rugby talent. Alastair Redpath takes you on a journey of the 'auld grey toon', highlighting events, people and industries that have shaped it over time.

Book excerpt: This local history tells the centuries-long story of a Scottish Borders town through its battles, traditions and transformations from prehistory to today. Hawick, Scotland, is famous for its annual Common Riding festival, an equestrian tradition that traces its roots to the 16th century Battle of Hornshole. But in this lively history, Alistair Moffat takes the narrative much further back into the mists of prehistory, to the time of the Romans, the coming of the Angles and the Normans. Moffat recounts how Hawick got its name, where the old village stood, and who the early barons of Hawick were. He then charts the amazing rise of the textile trade, bringing the story up to the present day. Hawick has changed radically over the many centuries since people began to live between the Slitrig and the Teviot. All that experience in one place has created a rich cultural heritage, one which the people of Hawick proudly carry into the future.

Excerpt: ... none of them would venture; upon which the girl herself waded boldly into the house, and got hold of the bag, with the money; bnt, in coming out, she was carried down by the stream. Providence, however, interposed for her safety. She was cast ashore on a green a little below the town, just alive, and the money grasped in both hands so fast, that with some difficulty it was removed. A little above the town three houses were quite covered with water, except the chimney tops; they were in an eddy which saved them." Two lives were lost by the flood at Silver Street. Hawick had another historic landmark in the year 1767, besides the flood, for the Duke of Buccleuch raised an action in the Court of Session against the town of Hawick concerning the extent and limits of Hawick Common. This action was allowed to fall through by mutual consent, and referred to arbitration. The arbitrator being the Hon. James Montgomery, Lord Chief Baron of Exchequer, who, after ten years' negotiation, apportioned fourteen-twentieths to the town and sixtwentieths to the Duke of Buccleuch and other heritors. The arbiter decided that the Common Haugh and Myreslawgreen did not fall to be divided. The award bears date 24th May, 1777. X. "Hawiok shall flourish 'mid dMtrnotloD, Wsb Drnid's dark prediotion; Strange the issues that unrolled it, Cent'riee after he'd foretold it." The portion of the Common that fell to the lot of the town by arbitration consisted of 1075 imperial acres, besides Myreslawgrenn and the Common Haugh. The Magistrates and Councillors resolved at once to make the most of what land was left to them, by having it fenced, and a portion of it at Pilmuir formed into a farm of 250 acres, rented for the good of the town. This procedure was challenged by...
