The fall of Robert Mugabe and the inauguration of Emmerson Mnangagwa as Zimbabwe’s new president in November 2017 were events that no one could have predicted. Just three weeks earlier, Mugabe had sacked Mnangagwa as vice-president, a move that seemed to end the long political career of the man known as ‘The Crocodile'. In the Jaws of the Crocodile tells the gripping story of how Mnangagwa fled Zimbabwe in fear for his life, and of his brief exile in South Africa, where he declared to Mugabe that he would return ‘in a matter of weeks’ to take control of the levers of power. It describes the military intervention against Mugabe and his allies, analyses the sudden power shift within Zanu-PF, and gives an eyewitness account of the mass demonstrations as people took to the streets to demand an end to Mugabe’s rule. It describes Mnangagwa’s return to Zimbabwe to take over the presidency, and concludes with an account of the disputed 2018 election. Drawing on interviews with Mnangagwa, his family, allies and opponents, and key political figures, this book gives unprecedented insights into the momentous events that changed the fate of a nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is about an orphan girl called Tambudzai. Tambudzai stays with her grandmother. The two live in abject poverty manifested by a monotonous diet of sadza (thick maize meal porridge) served with wild vegetables or mufushwa (dried cowpeas leaves) as relish everyday. To break the monotony Tambudzai goes out fishing in a crocodile-infested mighty Save River. She catches a lot of fish. She is attacked by a crocodile. The crocodile drags her across a pool in the river and into a tunnel that leads to its nest. The crocodile dumps into its nest what it thought was a corpse to feed its young ones. The young crocodiles hungrily attack Tambudzai trying to tear off some flesh from her body. Tambudzai recovers consciousness and kills all the young crocodiles. She burrows her way out of the crocodile nest in a bid to escape. On coming to check on its young ones, the mother crocodile finds them all dead. It follows Tambudzai's foot prints and crawls out of the nest through the same hole Tambudzai had made and used. Once outside it sees Tambudzai and it goes after her to avenge for the death of its young ones. Tambudzai tries to quicken her step but she cannot run fast because her leg was broken during the attack. Tambudzai is saved by some dogs that were chasing a duiker. The duiker passed between the crocodile and Tambudzai. The dogs saw the crocodile and attacked it. This gave Tambudzai a chance to escape from the jaws of the crocodile.

Book excerpt: Val Plumwood was an eminent environmental philosopher and activist who was prominent in the development of radical ecophilosophy from the early 1970s until her death in 2008. Her book Feminism and the Mastery of Nature (1992) has become a classic. In 1985 she was attacked by a crocodile while kayaking alone in the Kakadu national park in the Northern Territory. She was death rolled three times before being released from the crocodile’s jaws. She crawled for hours through swamp with appalling injuries before being rescued. The experience made her well placed to write about cultural responses to death and predation. The first section of The Eye of the Crocodile consists of chapters intended for a book on crocodiles that remained unfinished at the time of Val’s death. The remaining chapters are previously published papers brought together to form an overview of Val’s ideas on death, predation and nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After his father's heart attack in 1984, Peter Godwin began a series of pilgrimages back to Zimbabwe, the land of his birth, from Manhattan, where he now lives. On these frequent visits to check on his elderly parents, he bore witness to Zimbabwe's dramatic spiral downwards into the jaws of violent chaos, presided over by an increasingly enraged dictator. And yet long after their comfortable lifestyle had been shattered and millions were fleeing, his parents refuse to leave, steadfast in their allegiance to the failed state that has been their adopted home for 50 years. Then Godwin discovered a shocking family secret that helped explain their loyalty. Africa was his father's sanctuary from another identity, another world. When a Crocodile Eats the Sun is a stirring memoir of the disintegration of a family set against the collapse of a country. But it is also a vivid portrait of the profound strength of the human spirit and the enduring power of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential thrillers in media history, Jaws first surfaced as a best-selling novel by first-time novelist Peter Benchley in 1974, followed by the 1975 feature film directed by Steven Spielberg at the beginning of his storied career. Jaws is often considered the first "blockbuster," and successive generations of filmmakers have cited it as formative in their own creative development. For nearly 50 years, critics and scholars have studied how and why this seemingly straightforward thriller holds such mass appeal. This book of original essays assembles a range of critical thought on the impact and legacy of the film, employing new perspectives--historical, cinematic, literary, scientific and environmental--while building on the insights of previous writers. While varying in focus, the essays in this volume all explore why Jaws was so successful in its time and how it remains a prominent storytelling influence well into the 21st century.
