Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of a disjunctive theory of visual experiences first found expression in J.M. Hinton's pioneering 1973 book Experiences. In the first monograph in this exciting area since then, William Fish develops a comprehensive disjunctive theory, incorporating detailed accounts of the three core kinds of visual experience--perception, hallucination, and illusion--and an explanation of how perception and hallucination could be indiscriminable from one another without having anything in common. In the veridical case, Fish contends that the perception of a particular state of affairs involves the subject's being acquainted with that state of affairs, and that it is the subject's standing in this acquaintance relation that makes the experience possess a phenomenal character. Fish argues that when we hallucinate, we are having an experience that, while lacking phenomenal character, is mistakenly supposed by the subject to possess it. Fish then shows how this approach to visual experience is compatible with empirical research into the workings of the brain and concludes by extending this treatment to cover the many different types of illusion that we can be subject to.

Book excerpt: Identifying quickly illusion with deception, we tend to oppose it to the reality of life. However, investigating in this collection of essays illusion's functions in the Arts, which thrives upon illusion and yet maintains its existential roots and meaningfullness in the real, we might wonder about the nature of reality itself. Does not illusion open the seeming confines of factual reality into horizons of imagination which transform it? Does it not, like art, belong essentially to the makeup of human reality? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: André Le Nostre, the son and grandson of royal master gardeners, was the most influential landscape architect of his time. In this definitive study, Professor Hazlehurst shows how his style developed from a complex of influences: his family background, the classic tradition, French rationalism, and the theories of landscape design propounded by Jacques Boyceau and Claude Mollet. He also traces the impact of Père Niceron, Salomon de Caus, and Simon Vouet on Le Nostre's understanding of the principles of perspective and optical foreshortening. By careful analysis of the sites where Le Nostre is known to have worked, among them Vaux-le-Vicomte, Fontainebleau, the Tuileries, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Versailles, Chantilly, Meudon, and Saint-Cloud, Professor Hazlehurst illustrates his skillful use of optical illusion to introduce vitality and surprise into otherwise coldly formal compositions. More than 370 photographs, plans, and elevation drawings, some in color, are included to show how these illusions were created. Garden of Illusion, the first book-length study of André Le Nostre to appear in almost twenty years, provides important new insights into the practice of landscape gardening not only in France but in the Western world. -- Jacket.
