Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Prince Albert died in 1861 at the age of forty-two, his wife Queen Victoria followed this tragic event by an elaborate mourning period in which she surrounded herself as well as her people with memorials of the Prince Consort. Of these, the three most elaborate, the Albert Memorial Chapel, the Royal Mausoleum and the National Memorial to the Prince Consort, all included mosaic decoration. In close connection to current architectural theories such as polychromy or the ideal of the complete decoration as well as the research and experimentation that was carried out with and about the medium mosaic, the memorial mosaics were planned and designed. The medium Queen Victoria chose for these monuments served to underline and strengthen the image of Prince Albert that she created and through this also helped to secure her own claim to power as female sovereign. This book presents an overview of the history of mosaic in England up to the 1860s and a detailed description of the processes of planning and creating the mosaics. Queen Victoria’s memorial program as a whole will be described and compared to contemporary mourning rituals as well as British precedents for initiating similar cults.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of Japan’s two great religious traditions, Shinto is far less known and understood in the West. Although there are a number of books that explain the religion and its philosophy, this work is the first in English to focus on sites where Shinto has been practiced since the dawn of Japanese history. In an extensive introductory section, authors Joseph Cali and John Dougill delve into the fascinating aspects of Shinto, clarifying its relationship with Buddhism as well as its customs, symbolism, and pilgrimage routes. This is followed by a fully illustrated guide to 57 major Shinto shrines throughout Japan, many of which have been designated World Heritage Sites or National Treasures. In each comprehensive entry, the authors highlight important spiritual and physical features of the individual shrines (architecture, design, and art), associated festivals, and enshrined gods. They note the prayers offered and, for travelers, the best times to visit. With over 125 color photographs and 50 detailed illustrations of archetypical Shinto objects and shrines, this volume will enthrall not only those interested in religion but also armchair travelers and visitors to Japan alike. Whether you are planning to visit the actual sites or take a virtual journey, this guide is the perfect companion. This book was released on 2004 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the oldest and most authentic guide to an ancient Egyptian temple ever written - its author was an ancient Egyptian priest who lived in the first century B.C., under the last kings of the Ptolemaic dynasty, when the construction and decoration of the huge temple of Edfu was completed. The anonymous priest's tasks was to compose a text long enough to make up a line of hieroglyphic inscription on the girdle wall of the temple, stretching around it to a length of some 300 meters, and in it describe the temple in detail - its layout and construction, the functions of its chambers and chapels, and its external appearance and the impression it conveyed to the faithful. The language of the text, arising within the long tradition of Egyptian temple building, is stylized and poetic, but remarkably, the priest fulfilled his assignment with such accuracy, devotion, and enthusiasm that the monumental inscription can be used today by the modern visitor as a reliable and informative guide to the temple." "The inscription is here translated in full, and appears with notes by the translator on the essentials of ancient Egyptian religion and ritual and on the discovery and documentation of Edfu Temple, while a comprehensive glossary explains unfamiliar terms and concepts. Illustrations of the temple, the original hieroglyphs, and the kings who build the temple complement the text."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a catalog of the ancient Egyptian imports and Egyptianizing artifacts found in 1962 during the excavation of a cave near Tsoutsouros (ancient Inatos), Crete, Greece. The cave was a sanctuary dedicated to the Minoan and Greek goddess Eileithyia. The Aegyptiaca of the Minoan and Mycenaean eras on Crete signify the political and economic relations between the Aegean rulers and the Egyptian royal court. Several of the objects are Egyptian scarabs, and they certainly represent official Egyptian-Cretan affairs, especially those dating from the reign of Amenophis III to the end of the Eighteenth Dynasty. Much of the cataloged objects come from the 10th to 7th centuries B.C., and they are appropriate for venerating the goddess of childbirth and motherhood. The statuettes, seals, and vessels are lavishly illustrated with plates of color photographs.
