Book excerpt: The most comprehensive collection of letters by Rosa Luxemburg ever published in English, this book includes 190 letters written to leading figures in the European and international labor and socialist movements-Leo Jogiches, Karl Kautsky, Clara Zetkin and Karl Liebknecht-who were among her closest friends, lovers and colleagues. Many of these letters appear for the first time in English translation; all help to illuminate the inner life of this iconic revolutionary, who was at once an economic and social theorist, a political activist and a lyrical stylist. Her political concerns are revealed alongside her personal struggles within a socialist movement that was often hostile to independently minded women. This collection will provide readers with a newer and deeper appreciation of Luxemburg as a writer and historical figure.

Book excerpt: Letters are tangible language. Joining together in endless combinations to actually show speech, letters convey our messages and tell our stories. While we encounter these tiny shapes hundreds of times a day, we take for granted the long, fascinating history behind one of the most fundamental of human inventions -- the alphabet. The heart of the book is the 26 fact-filled “biographies” of letters A through Z, each one identifying the letter’s particular significance for modern readers, tracing its development from ancient forms, and discussing its noteworthy role in literature and other media. We learn, for example, why the letter X has a sinister and sexual aura, how B came to signify second best, why the word “mother” in many languages starts with M, and what is the story of O. Packed with information and lavishly illustrated, Letter Perfect is not only accessible and entertaining, but essential to the appreciation of our own language.

A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Book excerpt: A young woman goes missing… On the threshold of World War II, a young woman from a titled family in the south of England disappears, seemingly without trace. An unexpected inheritance… In 2016 on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia, Maddison Browne is a romantic fiction writer who is lucked out in love and scared that her best days as an author are over. When she learns that she is to inherit an antique piano from a woman she’s never heard of, she wonders why and is driven to find out. A family secret… In England, Maddison unearths a century-old secret that leads her to a family she never knew she had and an entanglement in affairs of state. And she meets someone who might turn her life around. The Piano Woman highlights the fragility of family, the price of love, and the importance of traditions that can sometimes save us from ourselves. ‘A real page turner in terms of story and plot. The gradual unravelling of ancestral secrets across four generations is skilfully executed.’ – Chandani Lokuge, author of My Van Gogh ‘As a fan of dual-timeline novels, this one hit the right notes. There is mystery and some romance and a well written, compelling tale of families, tradition, and personal growth. Highly recommended.’ – Phillipa Nefri Clark, author of The Station Master’s Cottage ‘The structure of the book was very well executed, maintaining the suspense throughout. I was hooked until the end.’ – Goodreads ‘The Piano Woman has all the elements of a great contemporary fiction read, laced with detailed historical links.’ – HappyValley_Reads

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2023 Clifford Geertz Prize in Anthropology of Religion, Society for the Anthropology of Religion The Jahriyya Sufis—a primarily Sinophone order of Naqshbandiyya Sufism in northwestern China—inhabit a unique religious soundscape. The hallmark of their spiritual practice is the “loud” (jahr) remembrance of God in liturgical rituals featuring distinctive melodic vocal chants. The first ethnography of this order in any language, The Sound of Salvation draws on nearly a decade of fieldwork to reveal the intricacies and importance of Jahriyya vocal recitation. Guangtian Ha examines how the use of voice in liturgy helps the Jahriyya to sustain their faith and the ways it has enabled them to endure political persecution over the past two and a half centuries. He situates the Jahriyya in a global multilingual network of Sufis and shows how their characteristic soundscapes result from transcultural interactions among Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and Chinese Muslim communities. Ha argues that the resilience of Jahriyya Sufism stems from the diversity and multiplicity of liturgical practice, which he shows to be rooted in notions of Sufi sainthood. He considers the movement of Jahriyya vocal recitation to new media forms and foregrounds the gendered opposition of male voices and female silence that structures the group’s rituals. Spanning diverse disciplines—including anthropology, ethnomusicology, Islamic studies, sound studies, and media studies—and using Arabic, Persian, and Chinese sources, The Sound of Salvation offers new perspectives on the importance of sound to religious practice, the role of gender in Chinese Islam, and the links connecting Chinese Muslims to the broader Islamic world.
