Book excerpt: The Camper Book will captivate all those who dream of waving good-bye to the rat race from the window of their own moveable home, be it a camper, RV, travel trailer, camper van, or tiny camper. Not just for placid retirees anymore, camper culture has sprung up among simplicity-seeking millennials, retro-loving "glampers," sports and movie stars, aging hippies, contract workers, "road-schoolers," and others. Award-winning journalist Dave Hoekstra hit the road in his own custom camper van, named Bluebird, to explore the history, culture, subcultures, and future of camper life. Traveling and talking his way through US campsites, RV parks, landmarks, and communities, Hoekstra draws out revealing stories from all walks of life—from Americans who are downsizing material goods while upsizing spiritual pursuits to RV enthusiasts such as Grammy-winning singer-songwriter John Prine and Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon. A modern-day Studs Terkel, Hoekstra provides a delightful mix of oral history, in-depth reporting, and practical information, while photographer Jon Sall's beautiful color photographs illuminate the unique people, places, and rigs that typify camper life.

Book excerpt: Are you tired of living in the same place? Do you want to know how you can visit the most beautiful places in the world and live the best possible life with your RV? The world of recreational vehicles is amazing and often not very well known, but it can give you the freedom that you have always yearned for. Every night you can fall asleep under a starry sky and every morning you can wake up in unspoiled nature. Until a few years ago, camping, boondocking and RV living were only practiced by the experts or those with enough money who didn't need to work. But today, that's no longer the case. I own an RV, a few years ago I had no knowledge of it but for some time I have made the RV my new way of life. Today I spend most of my time traveling the world with my RV. This guide is aimed at both the beginners who want to introduce themselves to the wondrous world of RV and the experts, who will find useful tips on how to improve their outdoor experience. Here's what I'm going to talk about in a nutshell Chapter 1 addresses buying a rig, because purchasing an RV will, of course, be the most important decision you are going to make when considering living the RV life. Chapter 2 brings attention to the technical side, with topics such as weights, capacities, and why they are important. Chapter 3 offers a thorough discussion about the equipment you're going to need. RVs don't come right off the factory line with everything you need after all! You will learn about setting up your utilities, outfitting yourself for indoor and outdoor RV living, making modifications to your rig, and learn ways to enhance security. Chapter 4 talks about your voyage. It's time to hit the road in your new outdoor home away from home! Here you will gain insights into the practical aspects of your trip, such a conducting pre- and post-trip inspections, hitching, securing, backing, using utilities at campgrounds, and when boondocking. Chapter 5 serves up the meat and potatoes of the RV lifestyle: day-to-day RVing. In Section 1 you will read about RVing with children and pets, how to get a good night's sleep, staying warm and cool, how to pack your clothing, bathing, outdoor activities, buying, and storing groceries, cooking inside and outside the RV, the costs of the RV lifestyle, maintenance and repair, and how to deal with breakdowns. The next section will go over what to consider when you are going to live in an RV, making cash on the road, healthcare options for RVers, how to receive mail while on the road, establishing your domicile, voting, banking, the retirement lifestyle, and how to prevent loneliness and isolation. Chapter 6 draws attention to the last step of setting out: planning the trip itself. Here you will learn about the different tools you can use for choosing a destination, planning your trip, and navigating along the way. The chapter is packed with information on using web-based tools, smart device apps, and other technology such as RV GPS units and trucker atlases to keep you on track and out of trouble. Whether your goal is to live in an RV or simply have a nice, relaxing vacation with your family and friends all while experiencing a sense of freedom that you have never had before, this guide is definitely for you!
