Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irrigation Scheme Operation and Maintenance is the tenth in the series of training manuals on irrigation prepared jointly with ILRI (International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvement). The manual presents some of the difficulties that irrigation organizations confront in undertaking their duties and provides some orientations on how to resolve them. The paper then proceeds to discuss the methods of operating an irrigation network and the working principles involved. The maintenance tasks are discussed. To draw similarities and differences the maintenance of a motorcycle is used as a reference for the corresponding activities in an irrigation scheme. Finally, a reference is made to the need for having an effective financial control whereby the management of the system has enough resources to undertake the operation and maintenance tasks. The manual is addressed to small and medium schemes and assumes that the management organization is already in place.

Book excerpt: Introduction about what this manual is covering concentrating on Large Scale Irrigation (LSI), diversion barrage or weir, intake (with auxiliary structures), and most common conveyance structures suitable for LSI. A very brief overview of an approach to match water needs with water availability (demand vs supply) with references and links to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) literature that is covering the topic in detail. A brief reference to the most common methods to obtain necessary hydrological parameters for IRR scheme design. A very brief overview of the importance of knowledge of geological conditions and the investigation needed to obtain geotechnical design parameters (including the most common geotechnical tests to obtain design parameters). Planning phase considerations regarding diversion and intake structure, discussing the role of the main components. More technical discussion on each component of the weir or intake, including formula and worked examples (hydraulic and structural computations). Conceptual, hydraulic, and structural considerations of main conveyance components, with emphasis and more detail on most used components (such as canals, siphons, aqueducts, retaining walls, etc.). A very brief overview of the approach to irrigation water management and Operations & Maintenance (O&M), with references and links to FAO literature that is covering the topic in detail. Standard specification for irrigation construction material.

Book excerpt: Quantitative research with respect to the combination of engineering and socialcultural- religious aspects based on the Tri Hita Karana philosophy in Subak irrigation schemes is original in the field of land and water development. A scenario analysis needs a good and careful system approach. Based on a Generic Algorithm the RIBASIM model was applied using the dependable 80% of discharge and shifting the start of land preparation. The results provide evidence that the cropping pattern of the fifth scenario results in an overall optimal agriculture production of the Subak schemes. The recoverable flow considered in the river basin scheme model plays an important role in the optimisation. Nevertheless, if a normal hydro-climate occurs, the other scenarios, especially the first scenario, can be applied as well. When the indigenous knowledge of farmers is compromised with present day knowledge of agricultural and technological developments, capability of these farmers increases, thus reflects the applicability of the Tri Hita Karana philosophy on harmony among people and harmony among people and nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever-increasing population growth has caused a proportional increased demand for water, and existing water sources are depleting day by day. Moreover, with the impact of climate change, the rates of rainfall in many regions have experienced a higher degree of variability. In many cities, government utilities have been struggling to maintain sufficient water for the residents and other users. The Handbook of Irrigation Hydrology and Management: Irrigation Case Studies examines and analyzes irrigated ecosystems in which water storage, applications, or drainage volumes are artificially controlled in the landscape and the spatial domain of processes varies from micrometers to tens of kilometers, while the temporal domain spans from seconds to centuries. The continuum science of irrigation hydrology includes the surface, subsurface (unsaturated and groundwater systems), atmospheric, and plant subsystems. Further, the book includes practical case studies from around the world, including locations such as Africa, Australia, China, India, the Middle East, the United States, and more. Features: Offers water-saving strategies to increase the judicious use of scarce water resources Presents strategies to maximize agricultural yield per unit of water used for different regions Compares irrigation methods to offset changing weather patterns and impacts of climate change
