It introduces many aspects of marine biotechnology, including bioenergy, pharmaceutical development, food security from mariculture, pollution handling, legal issues and conflicts. Information in the book is accompanied by clear images, flow charts, quantitative and qualitative data. Marine biotechnology is essential for realizing the previously untapped potential of marine bio-resources. These resources are used to develop innovative goods and procedures that aid in the global management of food, energy, and disease management. The development of innovative tools and solutions for more sustainable marine environmental management is another important section of this title. This reference book is of interest to teachers, researchers, and climate change scientists. It serves as an additional reading material for college, undergraduate, and graduate students of marine science and aquaculture. This is also a good research guide for food and fishing industry scientists.

Book excerpt: This book of abstracts summarizes the works presented at the Colombia 2018: International Conference on Marine Science - Towards a sustainable ocean, held at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, MedellĂn, Colombia. The conference brings together researchers, practitioners and educators to exchange and share their experiences in answering fundamental environmental and socio-economical questions related to marine ecosystems in Latin America. It provides an interdisciplinary forum for discussing environmental change and its impact on ecosystems and society, the sustainable use of marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as technological advances. The conference, which is jointly organized by the CEMarin and DICM, focusses on five research themes: 1. Ocean and society: The social dimension of ecosystem services. 2. Marine environmental change: From species responses to environmental modeling. 3. Marine resources: Sustainable use in a changing world. 4. Oceanography: Understanding the physical processes of atmosphere-ocean interactions. 5. Water waves: How the ocean affects life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative volume, the author addresses some important challenges related to the effective and equitable governance of marine protected areas (MPAs). These challenges are explored through a study of 20 MPA case studies from around the world. A novel governance analysis framework is employed to address some key questions: How can top-down and bottom-up approaches to MPA governance be combined? What does this mean, in reality, in different contexts? How can we develop and implement governance approaches that are both effective in achieving conservation objectives and equitable in fairly sharing associated costs and benefits? The author explores the many issues that these questions raise, as well as exploring options for addressing them. A key theme is that MPA governance needs to combine people, state and market approaches, rather than being based on one approach and its related ideals. Building on a critique of the governance analysis framework developed for common-pool resources, the author puts forward a more holistic and less prescriptive framework for deconstructing and analyzing the governance of MPAs. This inter-disciplinary analysis is aimed at supporting the development of MPA governance approaches that build social-ecological resilience through both institutional and biological diversity. It will also make a significant contribution to wider debates on natural resource governance, as it poses some critical questions for contemporary approaches to related research and offers an alternative theoretical and empirical approach.
