Book excerpt: Professor Olive Twist has come to Zinnia, Mississippi to study a mysterious grave wherein lies the Lady in Red, a perfectly preserved and stunningly beautiful but unnamed and unclaimed body. Olive claims she can not only identify the corpse, she can also prove the woman's scandalous role in the nation's history. Olive takes it a step too far, though, when she starts connecting elite Zinnia families with the same scandal. Dander up, Zinnia's society ladies know only one way to handle Olive: they call on the private investigative services of Sarah Booth Delaney. But Olive's real agenda is clear as Mississippi mud, and when Sarah Booth discovers a present-day dead body, she knows there's more than just family pride and Southern heritage at stake. If she can't find the murderer and fast, it might just be Sarah Booth's life on the line next. Carolyn Haines pulls out all the stops in Smarty Bones, the next charming, sassy, Southern-fried Sarah Booth Delaney mystery.

Book excerpt: Target Earth is the final book of the Emily Smith Trilogy. Emily Smith, Sasha, and Blain are in the voids of space between the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way Galaxy, together, commanding the Earth and Andrian Space Forces in an effort to destroy the alien entity from the Eighth Dimension. Their sheer numbers indicated that it is not possible to destroy them therefore their strategy changed to deter them from the earth for as long as possible with Sasha leading Space Commandoes to board and destroy their command ships. They believed this tactic would allow Sara time to marshal earth’s civilian and military defenses to help evacuate as much of Humanity and Andrians as possible onto Intergalactic Seed Carriers and launch them to different quadrants of the Universe. It was at this time they realized that the enemy was using delaying tactics of its own to allow an attack on the earth from a different direction thus avoiding Space Commands major defensive fleet. Sara used her childhood friend, Kyla, to contact anti-government forces and enlist their aid in defending the earth. The newly commissioned civilian commander, Frank Morningstar, took on this task and allied himself with the military to developed a strong defense. With this alliance in place most defenders believed they could defeat the enemy aliens. During an intelligence gathering attack by the enemy, Sara nearly gets herself killed by diving in front of an acid stream intended for her friend Kyla. The resultant death toll was over a thousand beach goers. Soon after encounter, enemy alien warships burst thru wormholes in ever increasing numbers too numerous to count.
