Book excerpt: Dawson's goal is to provide both English and Western riding instructors with an effective and safe teaching program. She explains how to assess a horse's particular characteristics in order to weed out potentially dangerous animals. She also offers guidelines for assessing instructors and students, including what makes a good instructor and what attitudes can get in the way of learning proper horsemanship. Since 80 percent of all accidents involve falls due to loss of balance, Dawson identifies the techniques that ensure that a horse and rider are in proper balance. Finally, since she is a lawyer as well as a riding instructor, Dawson includes a chapter on securing useful liability forms, what insurance coverage does and does not do, and how to handle accidents and lawsuits.

Book excerpt: Horse riding is widely enjoyed as a professional sport or a hobby by riders of all ages. It is also acknowledged as being potentially dangerous, yet many of these dangers can be avoided and the severity of accidents drastically reduced if safe practices and risk management are employed. Horse Safe covers safety around horses in detail and aims to raise awareness of what can happen. Beginning with an explanation of horses’ natural behavioural characteristics, such as herd behaviour, intelligence and body language, the author then presents the more human aspects of horse safety – safety equipment and how it should be maintained, the working environment, systems for safe horse management, safe riding, training for safe horses, and transporting horses safely. The book concludes with a chapter on how to reduce the risks when buying a horse and how to avoid potential pitfalls. Written by Jane Myers, a leading expert, and endorsed by the Association for Horsemanship, Safety and Education (AHSE), Horse Safe is highly practical and is invaluable for riders of all disciplines and skill levels.

Book excerpt: Heather Carrie Thomas grew up on the family ranch in Salmon, Idaho. Horses have always been a big part of her life. Her great grandpa, Don Ian Smith, gave Heather her first horse when she was just two years old. She spent several years in 4-H, learning all she could about horses, and got her first experiences with training horses and helping to instruct others about safely working with horses. She attended Carroll College in Helena, Montana, where she was an assistant instructor for the anthrozoology program's basic horsemanship class. During college and over her summer breaks she trained horses and taught riding lessons. In 2013, she graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in anthrozoology (human-animal interactions) and psychology. After graduation she decided to continue training horses and teaching riding lessons, and to try her best to help others enjoy horses as much as she does. Basic Horsemanship includes valuable insight on such fundamentals as grooming, haltering, bridling, saddling and basic riding, and includes critical safety tips for each of these facets of horse-handling.

His vividly illustrated manual shows you how to accustom your horse to a variety of circumstances, noises, and objects, thereby turning him into a more pleasurable, submissive, confident, and ultimately safer mount.
