Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1998. In this highly fragmented culture of ours books are needed to integrate fields of interest ordinarily considered separately, to state their common problems and to deal with their differences in the light of other criteria than the separate functions and local loyalties of the special interests in themselves. This book was originated with that purpose in mind. Specifically this book deals with the practical dualism of our modern morals. With the traditional Christian ethic at one pole and the variegated, often contradictory assemblage of practices and precepts of our secular life at the other, it has never been co-ordinated or made intelligible from within.

Book excerpt: 2015 Reprint of 1945 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Knight wrote about religion and social ethics throughout his career. "The Economic Order and Religion" was a collaborative project with Thornton W. Merriam. The book was intended to bring the differences among Americans' approaches to economic ethics into high relief by presenting two contrasting viewpoints, and allowing the authors to comment on each other's perspective. Prior to collaborating with Merriam, Knight had begun work on a book on religion, economics and social ethics. When the collaborative project emerged in the early 1940s as a realistic opportunity, the material already written was re-worked into the chapter essay "Liberalism and Christianity" included in this monograph.

Book excerpt: "Timothy Gorringe's experiences in grassroots organizations for social change in India and as scholar and chaplain at Oxford University infuse this eloquent exploration of social, biblical, and philosophical considerations of the nature and purpose of ethical discourse. Starting from the premise that ethics is a conversation whereby humanity chooses its common path, Capital and the Kingdom forcefully addresses the question of what constitutes an ethic "for life" in the post-Cold War era." "Gorringe uses as a thematic framework the Deuteronomic admonition, "therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live," (Deut. 30:19). Capital and the Kingdom demonstrates that the ethic which "chooses life" encompasses a great deal more than any single issue the phrase may suggest. In Part I, Gorringe explores the biblical basis for this ethic as well as a range of questions it raises for the individual, for society, even for non-human creation. At the heart of this exploration is this question: can there be ethical consensus or a universal ground for ethics in an age of moral relativism?" "Part II of Capital and the Kingdom turns to particular structures on which an ethic of life may be brought to bear. These structures include the concept and organization of work, leisure and human fulfillment; the theory and practice of economics; the definition and expression of human equality. Part III builds on the foundations laid in the first two parts, addressing contemporary issues of particular concern to those concerned with an ethic of life: the persistence and pervasiveness of poverty, the moral void of contemporary management theory and practice, the inequality that necessitates resistance and solidarity, the idea of wages and equal pay, the concept of private versus community property, and finally, the destitution and fate of the earth."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. In particular, are theology and economics entirely autonomous and distinct areas of inquiry? Economics and Religion: Are They Distinct? takes an inductive approach using case studies to shed light on the extent to which economics may be regarded as independent of the religious beliefs of its practitioners. The case studies comprise the first part of the book and are listed chronologically. These case studies are followed by commentaries, or interpretive essays; the authors of these commentaries are acting as a jury to consider the question `How sensitive is economics to theological considerations?' The editors provide a concluding chapter summarizing both the evidence and the findings.
