Book excerpt: When I am to be involved in a project or some other activity, either personal or involving other people, and whether I am in charge or a contributor, my brain wants me to be fully prepared. This happens whether I am providing ideas or concepts during the planning phase, providing status or developing work-a-rounds during the implementation phase, or identifying lessons learned during the evaluation phase. The problem is that my brain prefers that I get prepared at night when I should be sleeping. When I try to escape these fits of insomnia by thinking of something else, my brain has a good memory and brings me back to preparation. I started developing Digital Clock Watching as an escape mechanism. It is based on the card game poker, and it worked! Watching my digital clock for, and anticipating, different combinations of numbers was complex enough to keep my brain occupied, but with one minute between display changes, it was slow enough that I could go back to sleep. Watching for of-a-kind and straight combinations was straightforward and easy, but flushes and straight-flushes were a problem, which was eventually solved. When I told friends about my game, they became interested and told me that I should document it. Since all digital clocks should display the same numbers at any given time, it is a single-player game, but my friends later asked whether I could make it competitive. The result is this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been 5 years since publication of the first edition of Dr. Attarian’s Clinical Handbook of Insomnia which at the time was the first significant cl- ical textbook dedicated to insomnia, an often overlooked but important me- cal problem. The book was very well received. There has now been sufficient new information on the subject to warrant a second expanded edition of this very useful volume. Then, as now, the approach is to emphasize the frequent biological causes of insomnia rather than to attribute it primarily to underlying psychological and emotional factors. This new edition is an impressive major effort, having been expanded from 14 to 23 chapters including an extensive revision and updating of previous chapters with new references and the ad- tion of many new authors. An entirely new section of the book deals with insomnia in special populations including teenagers, pregnancy, menopause, and the geriatric population. Other new topics include insomnia as enco- tered in primary care practice, the role of circadian rhythms, the contribution of sleep related movement disorders to insomnia, insomnia in pain disorders, and the interesting entity of paradoxical insomnia, in which there is a large d- crepancy between the objective and subjective estimation of quantity of sleep. This collection within a single volume of practical information concerning a common but often neglected disorder remains a very useful addition to the armamentarium of the general or specialty physician who wishes to properly address insomnia in an informed and responsible manner.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this Handbook discussed neuroendocrine diagnostic tests and the diagnostic use of central nervous system amine metabolites. That volume further reviewed the toxicological evaluation of patients and the laboratory evalua tion of treatment outcome. It suggested a system for evaluating newly admitted psychiatric patients and dermed the scope of diagnostic procedures available in the emergency department. Volume II focuses on the use and interpretation of electro physiologic and radiologic diagnostic tests in psychiatry and then explores the laboratory evaluation of special groups of patients. The clinical sections of this volume are designed to assist the physician in in stituting a proper workup for specific patients and defining tests which will assist them in the differential diagnosis of various psychiatric disorders. Such workups are critical to exclude possible organic disorders which can present with psychia tric symptoms. The workup suggested for the various classes of patients will assist the clini cian with differential diagnosis, provide base-line information for long-term follow up, delineate biological perimeters at the beginning of treatment, protect the pa tient from unrecognized cardiac, renal, hepatic, or endocrine disorders which could be adversely affected by the administration of medications, and provide a rational sequencing of workup for particular disorders to insure the most thorough yet cost efficient approach to the patient.
