Book excerpt: Run over the everyday roads of the Isle of Man for over 100 years, the world-famous Tourist Trophy races have gripped the imaginations of successive generations of motorcyclists. From the earliest days of single-speed, belt-driven machines delivering 5 bhp, to the highly developed projectiles of today offering a fearsome 200 bhp, race fans have thronged the roadside banks and watched in awe as the best racing motorcyclists in the world rode the fastest machines of their day around the twists, turns and climbs of the 374 mile Mountain Course, all in pursuit of a coveted Tourist Trophy. This new updated edition covering the 2007 - 2012 races, reveals the event's colourful history through the high-speed activities of great riders such as the Collier brothers, Geoff Duke, Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, Steve Hislop, Joey Dunlop, John McGuinness and many others. It also looks at the machines and mechanical developments and race organisation, plus the financial rewards and commercial interests; setting them all in the context of the triumphs and tragedies of a great sporting event that has seen average lap speeds rise from 40 mph to over 130 mph. Written in an easy style, this book reveals the Manx TT's colourful history through its great riders, machines, mechanical developments and race organisation and is superbly illustrated with over 250 colour photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guidebook to 40 walking routes on the Isle of Man. The varied selection of day walks, which range from 1 to 14 miles long (2 and 22km) take in the best scenic routes right across this delightful island. Many routes can be combined to create longer more ambitious walks. The Isle of Man offers the walker a wonderfully diverse range of landscapes within a relatively compact island setting, and the routes reflect this diversity - scale the highest point Snaefell (620m), cross wide-open moorlands, drift over beaches and climb coastal clifftops. The assortment provides walkers with fantastic trails, along with detail on the wildlife, wild flowers, unique history and points of interest encountered. Alongside detailed route descriptions and OS 1:50,000 maps (blown up to 1:40,000 for greater clarity), there is plenty of practical information on getting to and around the Manx Isle and advice on making the most out of any exploration of the Isle of Man.

The route description is set out as a circuit and split into stages, with the longest walk being 15.5 miles and the shortest being 7 miles. Any fast walkers may wish to complete two stages per day, while those progressing at a more leisurely pace may decide to amble along and take in the splendid attractions along the way. Two further walks described in this guidebook, the 23 mile Millennium Way, which follows the ancient route of the kings, from Ramsey to Castletown, and the 14 mile Herring Way, which takes a more traditional route from Peel to Castletown. Both these routes cross the hills of the island's interior and can be combined to make an interesting longer walk.

Book excerpt: A New History of the Isle of Man will provide a new benchmark for the study of the island’s history. In five volumes, it will survey all aspects of the history of the Isle of Man, from the evolution of the natural landscape through prehistory to modern times. The Modern Period is the first volume to be published. Wide in coverage, embracing political, constitutional, economic, labor, social and cultural developments in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the volume is particularly concerned with issues of image, identity and representation. From a variety of angles and perspectives, contributors explore the ways in which a sense of Manxness was constructed, contested, continued and amended as the little Manx nation underwent unprecedented change from debtors’ retreat through holiday playground to offshore international financial center.

Book excerpt: Thirty years after the publication of the Isle of Man book I was in the process of preparing for my retrospective exhibition at the Museum Folkwang in Germany and started to re-examine my "Isle of Man" negatives. I hadn't had an occasion to think about this work since the first edition of the book was published. Going through these negatives again I found new images that I now liked, but at the time had overlooked or had not used for reasons that now mystify me. I ended up with 250 photographs that I now think of as my "Isle of Man" archive. This new version of Isle of Man draws from that archive. The photographs in this edition keep, more or less, to the same order as the original book but I have changed some of the images, added thirty others, and printed them all larger. Chris Killip
