Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleveland and Its Streetcars takes the reader back to when railway cars dominated the local street scene. The book focuses on the era of 1910-1954, from the time that Cleveland Railway Company took over operation of the consolidated streetcar lines to the day that the last streetcar rumbled over the city's streets. Cleveland's trailer trains, articulated cars, and its Peter Witt car model were widely admired by the nation, and the streetcar reigned supreme through the end of World War II. In 1942, the Cleveland Transit System (CTS) took over the streetcar lines, and eager to "modernize" its fleet, it decided to replace the streetcars with buses, trackless trolleys, and a crosstown rapid transit line. After the end of the war, in May 1945, the first post-war conversion took place. Then the pace of replacing the streetcars with rubber-tired vehicles quickened. By 1954, the task was complete. This book, with over 200 photographs, documents this changing Cleveland scene--when a wonderful era in transportation flourished and then, sadly, disappeared.

Using multi-colored streetcars, built in the 1940s, 1920s and even earlier, it is a transforming experience that carries the rider back to a more genteel and carefree time, while providing an efficient and pleasant way to get from here to there in a modern era. Its creation has shown the world that public transportation can be exciting, fun, and a source of civic pride. The author, an active participant in the success of the F-Line, has written the book in an upbeat and breezy style, sprinkling anecdotes drawn from his own experiences and those of fellow workers and participants throughout the book. In this way, the book will appeal not only to those who are in, or follow, the transit industry, but also to the average reader, rider, and San Francisco Bay Area resident. Anyone who rides the F-Line will get a much fuller appreciation of this great city. This book has 290 pages with over 500 color and black-and-white photographs.

Book excerpt: From 1901 to 1938 the Lake Shore Electric claimed to be—and was considered by many—"The Greatest Electric Railway in the United States." It followed the shore of Lake Erie, connecting Cleveland and Toledo with a high-speed, limited-stop service and pioneered a form of intermodal transportation three decades before the rest of the industry. To millions of people the bright orange electric cars were an economical and comfortable means of escaping the urban mills and shops or the humdrum of rural life. In summers during the glory years there were never enough cars to handle the crowds. After reaching its peak in the early 1920s, however, the Lake Shore Electric suffered the fate of most of its sister lines: it was now competing with automobiles, trucks, and buses and could not rival them in convenience. The Lake Shore Electric Railway Story tells the story of this fascinating chapter in interurban transportation, including the missed opportunities that might have saved this railway.
