Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After its Peruvian discovery in 2002, Phragmipedium kovachii became the rarest and most sought-after orchid in the world. Prices soared to $10,000 on the black market. Then one showed up at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, where every year more than 100,000 people visit. They come for the lush landscape on Sarasota Bay and for Selby's vast orchid collection, one of the most magnificent in the world. The collision between Selby's scientists and the smugglers of Phrag. Kovachii, a rare ladyslipper orchid hailed as the most significant and beautiful new species discovered in a century, led to search warrants, a grand jury investigation, and criminal charges. It made headlines around the country, cost the gardens hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations, and led to tremendous internal turmoil. Investigative journalist Craig Pittman unravels this tangled web to shine a spotlight on flaws in the international treaties governing trade in endangered wildlife--which may protect individual plants and animals in shipping but do little to halt the destruction of whole colonies in the wild. The Scent of Scandal unspools like a riveting mystery novel, stranger than anything in Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief or the film Adaptation. Pittman shows how some people can become so obsessed--with beauty, with profit, with fame--that they will ignore everything, even the law.

Book excerpt: A penniless young lady, rescued by providence. When Miss Fredericka Wycliffe's eccentric Uncle Phin dies and leaves her all his worldly goods, she cannot believe her good fortune. A passionate missionary man, Phineas Wycliffe was not wealthy, but a little cottage in the Highlands of Scotland and a modest bequest seem like riches beyond Fredericka's wildest dreams. The catch. To meet the terms of the will, Fredericka must swear on the bible to continue her uncle's good works on his last and greatest challenge; to bring spiritual light into the dark world of her nearest neighbour, the Laird of the Moncreiffe clan who lives at the forbidding and half-ruined Tor Castle.A man with scars, both visible and hidden.Ross Moncreiffe is a hard man, and one best left alone. Raised through the ranks from lowly private to Captain of the Cameron Highlanders the war has left him scarred and angry. The last thing he wants is a priggish English miss living on his doorstep and trying to show him the error of his ways.Vanilla and cinnamon.Miss Wycliffe does not give her word lightly nor scare easily, however. Besides, tormenting this glowering, great Highlander is too delicious to resist. Something tells this intrepid miss that there's more to the big Scot than meets the eye, and ... just why does he always smell so good?Ross is indeed hiding a surprising passion and one he'd rather die than reveal.Let the battle of wills commence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Scandal advances a relatively simple claim with far-reaching consequences for modernist studies: writers and readers throughout the early twentieth century revived the long-despised codes and habits of the roman à clef as a key part of that larger assault on Victorian realism we now call modernism. In the process, this resurgent genre took on a life of its own, reconfiguring the intricate relationship between literature, celebrity, and the law. Latham uses the genre to reconfigure modernism's development as a cultural practice diffused across texts and the networks of reception and circulation in which they are embedded. Writers like James Joyce, Jean Rhys, Oscar Wilde, and D.H. Lawrence deliberately employed elements of the roman à clef, only to find that it possessed an uncanny and even dangerous agency of its own--one that resonated through a complex system of publicity and constraint. Bringing these effects fully into view requires a mixture of close reading and archival excavation that proceeds here in chapters on the anonymous case study, Oscar Wilde's trial, libel law, celebrity salons, and Parisian bohemia. The Art of Scandal thus both salvages the roman à clef and traces its weird itinerary through the early twentieth century. In the process, it elaborates an expansive concept of modernism that interweaves coterie culture with the mass media, psychology with celebrity, and literature with the law.

Book excerpt: In this trenchant and lively study Brian McHale undertakes to construct a version of postmodernist fiction which encompasses forms as wide-ranging as North American metafiction, Latin American magic realism, the French New New Novel, concrete prose and science fiction. Considering a variety of theoretical approaches including those of Ingarden, Eco, Dolezel, Pavel, and Hrushovski, McHale shows that the common denominator is postmodernist fiction's ability to thrust its own ontological status into the foreground and to raise questions about the world (or worlds) in which we live. Exploiting various theoretical approaches to literary ontology - those of Ingarden, Eco, Dolezel, Pavel, Hrushovski and others - and ranging widely over contemporary world literature, McHale assembles a comprehensive repertoire of postmodernist fiction's strategies of world-making and -unmaking.
