Book excerpt: Perfect for every baseball fan, here is the story of New York Yankees baseball great Joe DiMaggio’s longest hitting streak in baseball history. In the summer of 1941, Yankee center fielder Joe DiMaggio and his favorite bat, Betsy Ann, begin the longest hitting streak in baseball history. But when Betsy Ann goes missing, will DiMaggio keep hitting? Set on the brink of World War II, this is a spellbinding account of a sports story that united the country and made DiMaggio a hero, at a time when one was profoundly needed. Barb Rosenstock's action-packed text and Terry Widener's powerful illustrations capture DiMaggio's drive as well as his frustration. The book also includes headlines, quotes, stats, and a detailed bibliography.

Book excerpt: “A line-drive hit of a book” about the Iron Horse and the Iron Man—two legends from two eras of baseball—and the nature of human endurance (The Wall Street Journal). When Cal Ripken Jr. began his career with the Baltimore Orioles at age twenty-one, he had no idea he would someday beat the historic record of playing 2,130 games in a row, a record set forty-two years before by the fabled “Iron Horse” of the New York Yankees, Lou Gehrig. Ripken went on to surpass that record by 502 games, and the baseball world was floored. Few feats in sports history have generated more acclaim. But the record spawns an array of questions. When did someone first think it was a good idea to play in so many games without taking a day off? Who owned the record before Gehrig? Whose streak—Gehrig’s or Ripken’s—was the more difficult achievement? Through probing research, meticulous analysis, and colorful parallel storytelling, The Streak delves into this impressive but controversial milestone, unraveling Gehrig’s at-times unwitting pursuit of that goal (Babe Ruth used to think Gehrig crazy for wanting to play every game), and Ripken’s fierce determination to stay in the lineup and continue to contribute whatever he could even as his skills diminished with age. So many factors contribute to the comparisons between the two men: the length of seasons, the number of teams in the major leagues, the inclusion of nonwhite players, travel, technology, medical advances, and even media are all part of the equation. This is a book that captures the deeply American appreciation—as seen in the sport itself—for a workaday mentality and that desire to be there for the game every time it called. “It tackles the allure of human endurance and the pitfalls of fame, but it is mostly a baseball book for baseball fans. It succeeds as both a thorough accounting and a love note to the game.”—The Washington Post

Book excerpt: "The Airborne Streak Tube Imaging LIDAR (ASTIL) was evaluated for use in detecting schools of tuna in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) waters in order to aid in reducing bycatch of dolphin associated with yellowfin tuna. Three airborne experiments were conducted and data were collected for southern bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, akule (trachiurops crumenophthalmus), giant bluefin tuna (GBFT) and dolphin. The LIDAR signature of tuna was studied and extended to an evaluation of fish and fish school detection of GBFT using STIL experimental data. The utility of fish school detection was confirmed for GBFT in terms of detection statistics for binary hypothesis testing and also by direct implementation of a three-dimensional matched filter algorithm. Based on the GBFT observations, modeled performance estimates were made for yellowfin in the ETP for an upgraded ASTIL system."--p.11

Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestselling thriller, a doctor is kidnapped in the mountain wilderness after a fight with her husband -- and as the FBI closes in, she must make dangerous choices to survive. Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina minutes after an argument with her husband Jeff. But by the time he reports her missing, the trail has (literally) gone cold. Fog and ice encapsulate the wilderness and freeze the search. While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory regains consciousness only to find herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark he won't even tell her his name. She's willing to take any risks necessary to survive. But before she can escape, the two encounter dangerous people who adhere to their own code of justice. A desperate young woman is caught at the center of a dispute, and Emory can't bring herself to look the other way, even if it means breaking the law. Rising tension and barely restrained passion blurs the lines between right and wrong, and Emory begins to wonder if the man with no name is the one who has rescued her from death . . . and from heartbreak. Combining the nail-biting suspense and potent storytelling that has made Sandra Brown one of the world's best-loved authors, Mean Streak is a wildly compelling novel about love, deceit, and the choices we must make when our lives are on the line.

Book excerpt: From the coauthor of the “excellent” Mr. and Mrs. North series: When a columnist is shot, NYC detective Nathan Shapiro must find out who wanted to bury the lead (The New Yorker). Nathan Shapiro might be the gloomiest member of Manhattan’s finest, but that doesn’t stop the dour detective from getting the job done when the going gets tough . . . Über-conservative political columnist Roger Claye has been killed with a bullet to the head in his own office at the far-right rag, the Sentinel. As Det. Lt. Nathan Shapiro and Det. Anthony “Tony” Cook get the scoop on their victim, they aren’t surprised to learn that he rubbed plenty of people the wrong way with his extreme views and racist diatribes. Although it’s possible the murder was not politically motivated, it seems much more likely someone hated Claye’s opinions enough to want him dead. If that’s the case, it’s up to Shapiro and Cook to figure out who decided to silence the bigot with extreme prejudice. A Streak of Light is the 9th book in the Nathan Shapiro Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

At age 23, Coach Bob Ladouceur launched a legend, "The Streak," with no teaching or head-coaching experience, and with his teams amassed the highest winning percentage in all of football history with 138 consecutive victories. This book takes readers behind the scenes, closely following individual players, as Ladouceur guides his team through the most daunting schedule in school history, the 2002 season. Numerous interviews with major-league coaches such as Bill Walsh, Steve Mariucci, and John Gruden show the depth of respect accorded to Ladouceur and his methods and philosophies. Written with full cooperation from the coach and including dozens of photographs, this book is perfect for anyone interested in the factors behind phenomenal team success.
