Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book of its kind! What began as a fun activity for my trumpet students has turned into a wonderful resource to improve their trumpet playing. Trumpet Folk Fill in the Blank is a book of thirty folk songs and nursery rhymes. Each song is presented first in an easy key, like C, F or G. Then it is transposed to other keys and certain strategic notes are left out. Those notes are replaced by question marks. The students are to practice the first version of the song until they get the sound of the melody in their ears. After they master the first version, then they are ready to play the "fill in the blank" versions of the songs in other keys. We use a total of seven key signatures in this book, up to three flats and three sharps. Any student who knows their scales up to three flats and three sharps should have a lot of fun playing these "fill in the blank" songs. Benefits of playing the "fill in the blank" songs include ear training, finger technique, sight reading, phrasing and tone.

Book excerpt: The winning volume in the 1987 Yale Series of Younger Poets competition is To the Place of Trumpets. As James Merrill, distinguished poet and judge of the competition, has said: Brigit Pegeen Kelly's poems suggest a kind of folk art-their clay washed of narrative grit, serviceably turned and fancifully decorated, fired, then filled at the creative instinct's oldest well. It is a pleasure to drink form this fine local pottery.

Book excerpt: The inspirational sermons of the old Negro preachers are set down as poetry in this collection -- a classic for more than forty years, frequently dramatized, recorded, and anthologized. Mr. Johnson tells in his preface of hearing these same themes treated by famous preachers in his youth; some of the sermons are still current, and like the spirituals they have taken a significant place in black folk art. In transmuting their essence into original and moving poetry, the author has also ensured the survival of a great oral tradition. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archival documents and new writings on the intermedia collaborations of avant-garde jazz trumpeter Don Cherry and textile artist Moki Cherry Don Cherry and Moki Karlsson met in Sweden in the late '60s. They married and began to perform together, dubbing their mix of communal art, social and environmental activism, children's education and pan-ethnic expression "Organic Music." Their home in Tågarp became a locus of artistic production, attracting free-spirited musicians, poets, actors and artists with the promise of collective life. There, Keith Knox assembled Tågarp Publication Number One to document the collectivistic practices blooming under the Cherrys' guidance. Reproduced here, the text includes interviews with Terry Riley and Cherry, a piece on Pandit Pran Nath, a report on the Bombay Free School and a survey of the esoteric Forest University by Bengt af Kintberg. This book explores Don Cherry's work of the period through additional interviews by Knox, a piece on his Relativity Suite and an essay by Fumi Okiji. Moki's writings on her workshops are featured alongside full-color reproductions of her tapestries, used as performance environments by Don's ensembles. Cherry collaborators Bengt Berger and Christer Bothén contribute travelogues from the era.

Book excerpt: Trumpet players! Do you need to improve your range, endurance, flexibility or sound? Daily Routines is a proven approach which has helped thousands of trumpet players grow in strength without having to resort to annoying high note methods. Daily Routines is NOT a high note method. Yet, most of its users have greater range than people who call themselves "screamers". The difference is that Daily Routines does not work on range separately from other aspects of trumpet playing. Range is a by-product of strength, and strength comes from very specific daily practice habits. With the Daily Routines book, you can play higher with greater endurance AND produce a quality sound. The systematic design of the routines makes the progress automatic. There is no need to stress over physical mechanics. The book is designed so that playing the exercises in the correct order automatically leads to proper physical technique.

Book excerpt: The MONSTER MUSIC JOURNAL is a wild and whacky, monster-infested space for you to fill with music compositions, transcriptions of your favorite songs, music theory exercises, and other monstrous bits 'n bobs. The generously spaced staff lines make writing musical notes easy for beginners (or for those who like to live life BIG). Plus, there is plenty of writing space for non-musical notes, so you can include song lyrics, love letters, or even scribble a doodle or two. The book is heavily illustrated with monster characters that will tickle the imagination of kids and adults. Created by the musician and illustrator husband-and-wife team, Eddie and Pearl Lewis, this music journal has many uses. Let it turn dull, repetitive music theory exercises into an adventure at every turn of the page. Suggest the illustrations as prompts for improvised music. Or use the journal to introduce young musicians to composition and transcription. Music homework just got an upgrade on the fun scale.
