Book excerpt: At its peak in the 1950s and 1960s, automobile manufacturing was the largest, most profitable industry in the United States and residents of industry hubs like Detroit and Flint, Michigan had some of the highest incomes in the country. Over the last half-century, the industry has declined, and American automakers now struggle to stay profitable. How did the most prosperous industry in the richest country in the world crash and burn? In Wrecked, sociologists Joshua Murray and Michael Schwartz offer an unprecedented historical-sociological analysis of the downfall of the auto industry. Through an in-depth examination of labor relations and the production processes of automakers in the U.S. and Japan both before and after World War II, they demonstrate that the decline of the American manufacturers was the unintended consequence of their attempts to weaken the bargaining power of their unions. Today Japanese and many European automakers produce higher quality cars at lower cost than their American counterparts thanks to a flexible form of production characterized by long-term sole suppliers, assembly and supply plants located near each other, and just-in-time delivery of raw materials. While this style of production was, in fact, pioneered in the U.S. prior to World War II, in the years after the war, American automakers deliberately dismantled this system. As Murray and Schwartz show, flexible production accelerated innovation but also facilitated workers’ efforts to unionize plants and carry out work stoppages. To reduce the efficacy of strikes and combat the labor militancy that flourished between the Depression and the postwar period, the industry dispersed production across the nation, began maintaining large stockpiles of inventory, and eliminated single sourcing. While this restructuring of production did ultimately reduce workers’ leverage, it also decreased production efficiency and innovation. The U.S. auto industry has struggled ever since to compete with foreign automakers, and formerly thriving motor cities have suffered the consequences of mass deindustrialization. Murray and Schwartz argue that new business models that reinstate flexible production and prioritize innovation rather than cheap labor could stem the outsourcing of jobs and help revive the auto industry. By clarifying the historical relationships between production processes, organized labor, and industrial innovation, Wrecked provides new insights into the inner workings and decline of the U.S. auto industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education is a central institution in U.S. democracy. In the 2010s, however, many states that spent previous decades building up their higher education systems began to tear them down. Growing hostility toward higher education reflected changing social forces that remade the politics of U.S. higher education. The political Right became increasingly reliant on angry white voters as higher education became more racially diverse. The Republican party became more closely connected to extremely wealthy donors as higher education became more costly. In Wrecked, Barrett J. Taylor shows how these social changes set a collision course for the Right and higher education. These attacks fed a policy agenda of deinstitutionalization, which encompassed stark divestment from higher education but was primarily characterized by an attack on the institution’s social foundation of public trust. In response to these attacks, higher education officials have offered a series of partial defenses that helped higher education to cope in the short-term but did nothing to defend the institution itself against the long-term threat of declining public trust. The failure to address underlying issues of mistrust allowed conflict to escalate to the point at which many states are now wrecking their public higher education systems. Wrecked offers a unique and compelling perspective linking higher education policymaking to broader social and political forces acting in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: In this outrageous novel from Joe Ide, "the best thing to happen to mystery writing in a very long time" (New York Times), the case of a young artist's missing mother sets IQ on a collision course with his own Moriarty. Isaiah Quintabe -- IQ for short -- has never been more successful, or felt more alone. A series of high-profile wins in his hometown of East Long Beach have made him so notorious that he can hardly go to the corner store without being recognized. Dodson, once his sidekick, is now his full-fledged partner, hell-bent on giving IQ's PI business some real legitimacy: a Facebook page, and IQ's promise to stop accepting Christmas sweaters and carpet cleanings in exchange for PI services. So when a young painter approaches IQ for help tracking down her missing mother, it's not just the case Isaiah's looking for, but the human connection. And when his new confidant turns out to be connected to a dangerous paramilitary operation, IQ falls victim to a threat even a genius can't see coming. Waiting for Isaiah around every corner is Seb, the Oxford-educated African gangster who was responsible for the death of his brother, Marcus. Only, this time, Isaiah's not alone. Joined by a new love interest and his familiar band of accomplices, IQ is back -- and the adventures are better than ever.

Cast Away meets The Breakfast Club in this fun read from a New York Times bestselling author. ~BookBub Content Warning: Contains some foul language and non-explicit sex scenes between older teens. I'm not sure how to begin this review and remain professional... so I'll just be honest. I FUDGING loved this book! (SOOO SOOO MUCH!) It was fantastic!=)..." ~ Nancy Figueroa, Tumbling Books, book blog “A Fun Debut Novel! My favorite part of the book was their time on the island. The character dynamics were well done, and Casey clearly put a lot of thought into what they would need to do to survive, not just physically but emotionally. This was a fun book and a promising debut novel..." ~ Ally Arendt, Word Vagabond “Fun read! I am a big fan of young adult books, this is one of my favorites. I have actually re read this book multiple times.” ~ Hipsterduck, Amazon Reviewer “This book, for lack of a better word, was amazing. From the character intros, to the last page, I was intrigued. Elle clearly understood teens, because all of their motivations and goals were believable; even the way in which they became stranded was believable. I LOVED EVERY aspect of this book. I definitely recommend it, a must-read.” ~ Brandon, Goodreads Reviewer A note about the series: I pretty much grew up on the East Coast of Florida, so I went to the beach a lot, and whenever I did, I was always looking out at the water wondering … “What if…?” What if I were stranded out on a boat somewhere, in shark-infested waters, and then washed up on a beach of a deserted island… How would I survive? For probably 30 years or more, I contemplated these questions every time I went to the beach or thought about the water, so I had a LOT of time to think about the details. This book was inside my head, in the making, for a really long time. That’s why it’s the first book I wrote, because it was finally time to get it out of my head and onto paper (or I should say, into my computer). When I found out about self-publishing for the Kindle, I thought, “What the heck? Maybe someone will like it as much as I do.” Now, several years later, with over 40 books written and a few spots on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists, I can say that it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It literally changed my life. I’m really glad that I spent so much time daydreaming while I was at the beach, and I’m even happier that I took a chance on this story and shared it with the world. **SEQUEL ALERT** This book was originally written without plans for a sequel. But so many readers asked for one, it was done. Published on December 31, 2012, RECKLESS picks up where WRECKED left off.
