Book excerpt: No one in Vietnam had to tell door gunner and gunship crew chief Al Sever that the odds didn’t look good. He volunteered for the job well aware that hanging out of slow-moving choppers over hot LZs blazing with enemy fire was not conducive to a long life. But that wasn’t going to stop Specialist Sever. From Da Nang to Cu Chi and the Mekong Delta, Sever spent thirty-one months in Vietnam, fighting in eleven of the war’s sixteen campaigns. Every morning when his gunship lifted off, often to the clacking and muzzle flashes of AK-47s hidden in the dawn fog, Sever knew he might not return. This raw, gritty, gut-wrenching firsthand account of American boys fighting and dying in Vietnam captures all the hell, horror, and heroism of that tragic war.

Book excerpt: aXin Loia is a term in the Vietnamese language meaning, aIam sorry.a It has now been three decades since the Vietnam War and a gradual thaw in the relationship between the United States and the former enemy. Unfortunately, the economy of the Asian nation has failed to progress. Although the natural resources are more than sufficient to provide a bustling economy, the know-how is severely lacking. As a last resort, the communist government turns to the Americans with a request for funds to save the nation. Many veterans agree that any assistance to that country should never occur. However, it is considered good policy to reply favorably to the Vietnamese. All is well until the discovery of thirty American POWs being secretly hidden from the world. The clandestine operation to free these men and bring justice to the communists is sure to provide suspense and raise the emotions of the reader of this thrilling adventure story.

Book excerpt: This book is the first ethnography on Vietnam’s contemporary dissident movement. As a country that became known and is still remembered as one of the last remnants of Communist revolutions, Vietnam has managed to lift itself from one of the poorest war-torn post-colonies to one of the fastest growing market economies in Southeast Asia. Yet, while holding on to the legacy of a communist-led liberation movement, the present-day Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) finds itself subject to political challenges from below. In recent years, dissident voices critical of the party-state's malgovernance over social, economic and environmental issues have mushroomed across classes, generations and provinces. Based on extensive ethnographic data, this book explores distinct political practices and political ideas of Vietnam's dissidents. It examines different anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian practices of democracy, labour, peasant and religious activists and reveals that anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian practices are—at times—motivated by nationalist, anti-communist and statist ideas and ideologies. Understanding this dissonance between political practices and political ideas within the context of global capitalism and coloniality lies at the heart of this book.
