Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first design book to look at the creativity within this growing market of DVD packaging, and its future potential. In response to the rising interest in CDs and DVDs as desirable objects, this book explores the creation of groundbreaking packaging from a production point of view. In addition to the traditional graphic elements of cover art, it explores special features of the physical packaging itself: formats, bindings, casings, materials, textures, and finishes. From movie to music packaging, the book explores both the creative inspiration behind the work (the artwork, typography, materials, printing techniques, and formats) and the practical considerations and restrictions (record company stipulations, inclusion of essential material, and budgets). Through award-winning work from the last decade, Print and Production Finishes for CD and DVD Packaging shows how designers exploit the 2-D and 3-D qualities of CD and DVD packaging to create highly collectable works of art. From producing the latest aspirational Deluxe Box to making a standard format exciting, this book is both an indispensable practical guide and a sourcebook for ideas. By analyzing the best in the business, it gives readers a thorough understanding of the design opportunities available with standard and special packaging, and how materials and print and production processes can be utilized to create something special.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an enormous wealth of materials and of print and manufacturing processes currently available to designers. These opportunities are rarely fully explored, whether from lack of knowledge, or from a belief that they will be too costly, too complicated, or too time-consuming. Materials, Process, Print explores these diverse possibilities, providing insights into how they can be stretched, skewed, and subverted to produce original results. In-depth analysis of specific materials and of key print and manufacturing processes is combined with a series of case studies showcasing innovative practice from major international studios at the cutting edge of contemporary design. Functioning as a handbook for reference and a highly illustrated source of ideas and creative solutions, this book suggests fresh approaches and new ways of thinking for designers working in graphic design and packaging, and will also be of interest to product designers and anyone who commissions design in these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficiently and profitably delivering quality flexible packaging to the marketplace requires designing and manufacturing products that are both "fit-to-use" and "fit-to-make". The engineering function in a flexible packaging enterprise must attend to these dual design challenges. Flexible Packaging discusses the basic processes used to manufacture flexible packaging products, including rotogravure printing, flexographic printing, adhesive lamination, extrusion lamination/coating; and finishing/slitting. These processes are then related to the machines used to practice them, emphasising the basics of machines’ control systems , and options to minimize wasted time and materials between production jobs. Raw materials are also considered, including the three basic forms: Rollstock (paper, foil, plastic films); Resin; and Wets (inks, varnishes, primers). Guidance is provided on both material selection, and on adding value through enhancement or modification of the materials’ physical features. A ‘measures’ section covers both primary material features – such as tensile, elongation, modulus and elastic and plastic regions – and secondary quality characteristics such as seal and bond strengths, coefficient of friction, oxygen barrier and moisture vapour barrier. Helps engineers improve existing raw material selection and manufacturing processes for manufacturing functional flexible packaging materials. Covers all aspects of delivering high value packaging to the customer – from the raw materials, to the methods of processing them, the machines used to do it, and the measures required to gauge the characteristics of the product. Helps engineers to minimize waste and unproductive time in production.
