Book excerpt: Whether you are just getting acquainted with the joys of running or you can recite the brand and model number of your last 12 pairs of running shoes, you’ll identify with this book as runners did with the popular first volume, I Run, Therefore I Am—Nuts! Best-selling running humorist Bob Schwartz—the Dave Barry of running—is back and will once again have you laughing as he captures the humor, craziness, and obsessions of runners—new and old—with this new collection of 43 hilarious stories. I Run, Therefore I Am— STILL Nuts! brings out the humor in situations that every runner can relate to: • Suffering from RWIA, otherwise known as running watch information addiction • The addictive nature of high-intensity interval training • The depths of despair upon learning your favorite shoe will be discontinued • Embracing the saving grace of age-graded race time calculators • Attempting to run with a reluctant canine companion • Trying out running in the oxymoron of barefoot shoes If you know that the iliotibial band is not an alternative rock group, wear bruised toenails like badges of honor, and know the feeling of having an elephant resting on your shoulders as you’ve hit the wall—this book is for you!

In fact it was the original reason I became a loyal subscriber in the fi rst place: the thriceweekly columns of my all-time favorite writer, the late, great Lewis Grizzard. Trust me when I say that as a loyal University of Florida graduate it’s diffi cult for me to admit there is actually something good that came out of the University of Georgia, and that something would be Lewis Grizzard. Born and raised in nearby Moreland (I reside in Peachtree City, Georgia), Grizzard had a major influence on my writing style. This is my sixth self-published book; one of them sold so well a publisher came a-calling tobuy the rights to it. Now I’d like to take my writing to the next level. That’s where you come in. Consider this book as both my job application and resume for a position on your editorial staff. Everything here on the back cover is my cover letter to you. I leave you with one simple question: When do I start?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over 3,000 pieces of wit and wisdom from runners famous and humble, here is an important running resource and a great gift for any runner. George Sheehan, a celebrated running writer, philosopher, and physician, once wrote, "The more I run, the more certain I am that I am heading for my real goal: to become the person I am." Today, many runners—whether they are training for the Olympics or whether they fit runs into their lunch hours—would agree that for them the sport is much more than a way to stay in shape. Their running defines who they are and leads them to achieve goals that they might never have thought possible. This tremendous collection of wisdom captures the spirit and passion of those who run in over 3,000 entries, covering topics such as training, gear, running philosophy, and running in youth and old age. The Gigantic Book of Running Wisdom will inspire everyone from seasoned marathoners to running novices. It includes thoughts from famous athletes, writers, politicians, and more, including Percy Cerutty, Carl Lewis, Tom Brokaw, David Letterman, William Shakespeare, Farrah Fawcett, Emil Zátopek, Bill Rodgers, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sebastian Coe, Bill Clinton, Grete Waitz, Roger Bannister, and hundreds of others. The one thing they all have in common is their understanding that, as Amby Burfoot put it, "As we run, we become." 16 b/w illustrations. "You have to forget your last marathon before you try another. Your mind can't know what's coming."—Frank Shorter "I love the feeling of freedom in running, the fresh air, the feeling that the only person I'm competing with is me."—Wilma Rudolph Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Book excerpt: My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me: 1. I’m in a coma. 2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore. 3. Sometimes I lie. Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can’t move. She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Schwartz reminds us of the necessity, no matter how harried or confusing things are, to appreciate the humor in the day-to-day nature of family life. Bob gives parents a reason to laugh as he navigates the unexpected twists and turns of parenthood every mom and dad has experienced - such as that feeling of panic when you hear the toilet being flushed and immediately followed by your child's less than reassuring yell of "Uh-oh!" Or the admonition to your five-year-old of, "No, you can't have the leftover cotton candy for breakfast, even if you do pour milk over it." Perhaps parents also need the reassurance that Bob offers. In looking back on his initial years of parenthood, Bob writes, "There was one word that sprang to mind - Naive. That's French for 'Buddy, you don't even have a clue.'" If you, like Bob, are entirely clueless at the beginning of parenthood, there's hope for the future. For while imparting crucial information to his children like "the shower curtain goes inside the bathtub; don't put marbles into the garbage disposal, and it's not a great idea to see how many peas you can stick up your nose," Bob did learn things like how to navigate the challenging world of school carpool pickup without infuriating the power hungry fifth grade Safety Patrol. And you, like Bob, might also make some headway with the linguistic parental challenge of cracking the grunt communication code of teenagers. Bob Schwartz tackles these problems and more. He tells us that the purpose of his essays is to have us embrace the humor of parenthood and the fun of family life. "Let laughter be the fuel for this thrilling, and yes indeed, sometimes pandemonium-producing journey." Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been a runner for over 40 years, and that is the foundation of my book. It is titled "Run for Your Life". While running is the foundation of the book, I have tried to intertwine humor, inspiration and motivation. I acknowledge that it can be less interesting to hear one person talk about just themselves, so I've also incorporated other runners' experiences/memories, that they have been willing to share. To me, the title has more than one meaning. There is more to running than just the running, as you'll read about. The cover photo is comical and based on a true running story of mine. It is a picture of 2 mean Billy goats chasing me down the road while I was out running in the country. So, run for your life, as in to save it. Also, it means to me, run for a lifetime, as I have been running since I was 7 years' old and plan to until I am no longer able. And yet a 3rd meaning to the title includes running as a way of staying fit and healthy (in all aspects of health - mental, physical, emotional, spiritual). I am a Christian and I have always had a sense of humor, (or at least I think so), therefore, I am intertwining both elements throughout the book, as both are important to me and they keep it interesting. I have always loved to coach others, to inspire them, and provide encouragement, help them to set goals and to work to reach them. I always try to focus on the 'lighter' side of things, and get others to as well. Anyone who knows me well can attest to the fact that I generally tend to always look on the bright side, and when something negative happens, I have a well-known habit of saying "Well, the good thing is...." So, while I do have some areas in my book where I am sharing some deep parts of my heart, (mainly to relate to the humanness in us all), I try to keep the overall feel more on the funny and light-hearted side. After someone has read my book, I want them to take away some value from it. Be that on a spiritual level, a learning level, a motivated level or even just to have laughed and enjoyed reading it. And to want to get out and exercise and enjoy it!

Book excerpt: Charlie Engle’s “fascinating account of the high and low points of his life as an ultramarathon runner…is uplifting and inspirational” (Publishers Weekly) as he describes his globe-spanning races, his record-breaking run across the Sahara Desert, and how running helped him overcome drug addiction—and an unjust stint in federal prison. After a decade-long addiction to crack cocaine and alcohol, Charlie Engle hit bottom with a near-fatal six-day binge that ended in a hail of bullets. As Engle got sober, he turned to running, which became his lifeline, his pastime, and his salvation. He began with marathons, and when marathons weren’t far enough, he began to take on ultramarathons, races that went for thirty-five, fifty, and sometimes hundreds of miles, traveling to some of the most unforgiving places on earth to race. The Matt Damon-produced documentary, Running the Sahara, followed Engle as he lead a team on a harrowing, record breaking 4,500-mile run across the Sahara Desert, which helped raise millions of dollars for charity. Charlie’s growing notoriety led to an investigation and a subsequent unjust conviction for mortgage fraud for which he spent sixteen months in federal prison in Beckley, West Virginia. While in jail, Engle pounded the small prison track, running endlessly in circles. Soon his fellow inmates were joining him, struggling to keep their spirits up in dehumanizing circumstances. In Running Man, Charlie Engle tells the surprising, funny, and emotional story of his life, detailing his setbacks and struggles—from coping with addiction to serving time in prison—and how he blazed a path to freedom by putting one foot in front of the other. “A fast-paced, well-written account of a man who accepts pain, pushes beyond imagined limits, and ultimately finds redemption and peace” (Booklist), this is a raw and triumphant account about finding the threshold of human endurance, and transcending it.
